Brian Joseph Coyne Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A retired intellectual property attorney with more than 40 years of experience in the field, Dr. Coyne maintained a private law practice in Olympia, Washington, until his retirement in 2017. Established in 1985, Miles Way Coyne, PLLC represented clients in such matters as patents, trademarks and copyrights, civil litigation, real estate, family law, personal injury, and wills and probate. Dr. Coyne obtained patents for clients in fields such as medical devices (e.g., hemodialysis catheter, binocular opthalmoscope); workplace safety (e.g., for chain saw operators, roofing installers); environmental protection (e.g., removal of ammonia and phosphate pollutants from liquid streams, improvements to photobioreactors, clean up of manure lagoons, detection of water leaks); improvements to combustion engines and home electrical appliances; and homeland security defenses. His copyright litigation includes obtaining a permanent injunction against infringement of copyrighted sculptures that generate the Hebrew alphabet by shadowgrams (Tenen v. Dr. Coyne received his J.D. degree from Boston University School of Law in 1976 where he was a Milbank Memorial Fund Fellow in Health Care Policy, and in Olympia as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Washington between 1976 and 1981, where he provided legal counseling and litigation services to the Department of Social and Health Services relating to state regulation and Medicaid funding of health care institutions and as legal counsel to the Washington State Board of Health, and was an intellectual property attorney for J. Leggett in Tacoma from 1981 to 1983.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Dr. Coyne found success as a scientist. Dr. Coyne received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963 from Cornell University where he studied engineering and majored in mathematics. After obtaining his doctorate degree from The University of Chicago, Division of Biological Sciences, with a Ph.D. dissertation on mathematical modeling of genetic regulation of enzyme synthesis in bacteria, published in Biophysical Journal, he completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in the department of biology at Yale University in cell biology and a second postdoctoral fellowship in pediatrics at the Shriners Burns Institute in Boston.

Born in Yonkers, New York, Dr. Coyne became involved in various community initiatives once he became established on the west coast. While still an assistant AG, he played violin with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra and, more recently, has played piano for community events. He was a co-founder and president in its early years of Thurston Community Television (TCTV) in Olympia between 1985 and 1991. Dr. Coyne has provided volunteer legal services for Thurston County Volunteer Legal Services and, since 2019, has served on the Board of Trustees of the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation.

Dr. Coyne has been admitted to practice law by the Washington State Bar Association since 1976 and has been a registered attorney practitioner before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office since 1980.

Dr. Coyne is a long-time member of the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society, and currently serves as an arbitrator in civil actions in the Superior Courts of the State of Washington.
