Having aspired to become a surgeon since his early childhood, Dr. Matthews earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1989, and later completed an internship and residencies in general surgery. Following this period, he garnered experience as a fellow in surgical critical care at the Mayo Clinic Foundation for Medical Education and Research College of Medicine. Well qualified in his field, Dr. Matthews is certified in advanced trauma life support and advanced cardiac life support.

Now retired, Dr. Matthews enjoyed a successful tenure at the Grady Memorial Hospital spanning over a decade. He acted as an attending surgeon, director of trauma and surgical critical care and co-director of the surgical intensive care unit. Moreover, throughout his career, he served as a professor of clinical surgery and director of trauma and surgical critical care for the Morehouse School of Medicine.

In his roles at Grady Memorial Hospital, Dr. Matthews participated on numerous committees, including the after cardiac arrest committee, the trauma committee, the campus library committee and the electronic health record committee. Likewise, he acted as a member of the Education Committee and the Residency Advisory Committee at the Morehouse School of Medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr. Matthews has conducted extensive research on vitamin D. Notably, he even introduced vitamin D deficiency to the United States Army Generals as a national security threat. During the coronavirus pandemic, he was featured in numerous media and news outlets for his studies on the vitamin and its effects on the virus, including having been featured on ABC News, Glamour International Magazine and Epic Media. Notably, he holds a patent involving the relationship between traumatic brain injuries and concussions with vitamin D. Recognized as a top vitamin D researcher worldwide, he has been invited to speak at the Food and Drug Administration and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Matthews has earned a laudable reputation for his work, including having received the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award, the Clinical Scientist Award and several academia-related awards. He was distinguished as the Most Cited in The American Journal of Surgery Articles since 2011 in 2012. Amongst his numerous accomplishments, he is most proud to have been inducted into the Royal Society of Medicine, which includes such famous researchers as Sigmund Freud, Louis Pasteur and Prince Phillip.
