She has been the chief executive officer for Design Studio LLC since 1996, collaborating with her contractors to provide transparent and complete services for her clients. She often works with condominiums, providing them an outline of the design, lists of furniture and other information regarding the design process to help beautify and optimize their spaces. Operating with a great deal of knowledge and integrity, she was able to sell $750,000 in the first year she was in business.
Before starting her creative career, Ms. Utley served as a senior negotiator for Westinghouse Electric Corporation and subsequently as a manager of subcontracts for Boeing. In 1986, she acquired a role as the director of contracts for Northrop Grumman Information Systems, where she remained until 1995. While developing her business, she was a federal contract and business operations manager at Microsoft from 1995 to 2000 and a strategic account contract manager for Cisco Systems from 2000 until 2006. She also worked in strategic procurement and contracts for Freddie Mac between 2014 and 2015.
Long dedicated to civic advocacy, Ms. Utley serves as an ice skating trainer for the Special Olympics. She also volunteers in an effort to benefit her elderly clients while going above and beyond in terms of service. Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Utley completed coursework in interior design at West Virginia University and earned a Master of Business Administration from Johns Hopkins University in 2001. She subsequently attained a staging certification from Allied ASID.
To commemorate her accomplishments, Ms. Utley won a Best in Design Award from Room Reveal. She was named the Top Interior Designer by the Washingtonian in 2008 and Best Designer of the Year in 2013 and 2017. In 2018, she received the American Award and was recognized as a Woman of Distinction in 2021. Her company was also honored as the Best of 2018 Bethesda, and Best in Client Services from USITC for 2018. While working in her contracting roles, she was a three-time recipient of the Achievement Award from Cisco Systems and was a Top Contributor with Microsoft. Additionally, she was presented with 11 awards from BDM International.
Having garnered a great deal of success through referrals, Ms. Utley intends to continue her work as an honest designer. She strives to implement positivity into all facets of her life, including her profession, her marriage and her family. Looking toward the future, Ms. Utley plans to focus more on residential design, while reexamining her work with commercial spaces.
