Recognized for her leadership and tenure, Ms. Hutchins has represented MBH Farms in Elizaville, New York, since 1986. Having served as the organization's president and the chief executive officer from 1987 to 2001, she now maintains her affiliation as the Angus cattle farm's chairperson.

Additionally, Ms. Hutchins is deeply invested in her family-owned and operated business, Compotite Corporation, where she presently serves as the chairperson and previously found success as the vice president of development, president, and chief executive officer since 1987. Founded in the early 1920s by her grandfather, G.A. Morthland, and later headed by Ms. Hutchins' father, Andrew Morthland, Compotite notably sells a patented material that serves as a waterproofing substitute for lead shower pans.
During an earlier stage of her career, Ms. Hutchins was a junior mathematician for Shell Development Company, Shell Global, in Emeryville, California, between 1961 and 1963. She subsequently served as a mathematician for the Corporation for Economic and Industrial Research in London from 1964 to 1965 and as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company in New York from 1965 to 1967. During her tenure with Shell, Ms. Hutchins authored several publications on differential equations and partition programming. She was also the editor for McKinsey & Company's Operations Research-Management Science Bulletin from 1965 until 1967.

Throughout her professional career, Ms. Hutchins has dedicated herself to civic service. She presently sits on the advisory committee for the Columbia Land Conservancy, American Farmland Trust, and chaired the overseers' committee of the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University between 1995 and 2004. Between 1995 and 2004, she has served on numerous other Harvard University committees, including the Board of Overseers as its president. Furthermore, Ms. Hutchins was a trustee for the Bowdoin College Summer Music Festival (now Bowdoin International Music Festival) in Brunswick, Maine, and a trustee for the Long Island Biological Association in Cold Spring Harbor, New York.

Ms. Hutchins is an alumnus of Farmingdale State College, State University of New York, where she received an Associate of Applied Science in 1985. She previously received a Bachelor of Arts at Radcliffe College, Harvard University, in 1961. To remain aware of developments in her field, Ms. Hutchins is a member of the American National Standards Institute, where she has been active on the national waterproofing standards committee since 1988.

Well-regarded for her manifold accomplishments, Ms. Hutchins was recognized in 1979 with an honorary degree from the Royal College of Music in London. She was also the recipient of the Harvard Medal from Harvard University in 2004 for her outstanding service, leadership and commitment.
