WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA, June 27, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gary E. Davis has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Davis has dedicated his life to the stewardship and conservation of national parks, leaving an indelible mark on the field of environmental science. His career with the U.S. National Park Service spanned from 1965 to 2007, during which he held various roles that showcased his commitment to preserving nature for future generations. Beginning as a national park ranger in Northern California, he honed his skills in law enforcement and resource management, ensuring the protection of natural resources and the safety of park visitors. His passion for marine biology led him to pursue a master's degree in fisheries and marine biology from San Diego State College in 1968, further equipping him with the knowledge needed to excel in his field.
Mr. Davis' career trajectory took a significant turn when he joined the Virgin Islands National Park as a park ranger, where he played a pivotal role in Project TEKTITE, a groundbreaking initiative that assessed human behavior in isolated conditions akin to outer space. His involvement as a liaison and later as an aquanaut underscored his adventurous spirit and dedication to scientific exploration. This experience laid the foundation for his future endeavors, including the establishment of the Great Annual Fish Count in 1993, a citizen science program that continues to engage recreational divers and snorkelers in assessing fish populations.
Throughout his tenure with the National Park Service, Mr. Davis achieved numerous milestones that have had a lasting impact on park stewardship. He designed and implemented a national program to inventory and monitor park ecosystems' vital signs, providing essential data for assessing nature's condition within parks. This initiative, inspired by his early experiences in the Everglades, Dry Tortugas and Biscayne National Parks, culminated in the establishment of 32 biome-based inventory and monitoring networks across 270 national park sites, it was founded on a prototype developed and tested for a decade in Channel Islands National Park, California.
In addition to his work with the National Park Service, Mr. Davis has contributed significantly to academia and conservation organizations. As president of GEDavis & Associates since 2007, he has worked tirelessly to analyze complex environmental information and provide innovative solutions to conservation challenges. His role as co-editor of "The Photographer's Frame" in the Parks Stewardship Forum highlights his ability to communicate scientific research through visual narratives effectively.
Mr. Davis' academic achievements have been instrumental in shaping his career. He earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in biology from San Diego State College. His certification as a Certified Fisheries Scientist by the American Fisheries Society in 1980 further solidified his expertise in fisheries research and ecology.
His contributions have been recognized through numerous awards, including the Emil W. Haury Award for Scientific Research from the Western National Parks Association in 2013 and the William E. Ricker Resource Conservation Award from the American Fisheries Society in 2004. As an author of over 200 scientific publications, Mr. Davis has shared his insights on topics ranging from climate change impacts on national parks to marine national park stewardship.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. Davis is passionate about photography, storytelling and spending time with friends and family. Alongside his wife, he continues to explore new avenues for heritage conservation through visual essays and educational initiatives. Looking ahead, he plans to travel to Florida for the dedication of the REEF Ocean Exploration Center for Marine Conservation—a testament to his enduring commitment to conservation education and research.
