Dr. Despa is a distinguished professor of pharmacology at the college of medicine at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, where he has been a pivotal figure since 2013. In addition to lecturing, his research primarily focuses on diabetic dementia and the intricate relationship between type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. Before being acquired by the University of Kentucky, Dr. Despa served as an assistant professor at the University of California, Davis, from 2008 to 2013. During this period, he expanded his research to investigate how amyloid formation in the pancreas affects pancreatic function and contributes to the development of type 2 diabetes. Earlier, Dr. Despa conducted medical research at the school of medicine at the University of Chicago between 2004 and 2007.
Dr. Despa's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Bucharest in Romania in 1993, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy from the Institute of Atomic Physics in Magurele, Bucharest, in 1997. Dr. Despa also pursued postdoctoral studies in chemistry at KU Leuven in Belgium and later at the University of Chicago, where he delved into protein interactions and water dynamics under the mentorship of Dr. Stephen R Berry. Dr. Despa completed with Commendation the Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program at Harvard Medical School Professional, Corporate and Continuing Education and was honored with the Excellence on Drug Development Team Assignment.
Throughout his career, Dr. Despa has been an active member of several professional organizations, including serving as the secretary and treasurer for the Society for Heart and Vascular Metabolism from 2017 to 2023. His contributions have extended beyond academia through volunteer work and fundraising activities aimed at supporting student travel grants within this society. As a keynote speaker and author, Dr. Despa has shared his insights at prestigious universities across the United States, Europe and Asia.
Dr. Despa's expertise in this field has garnered him numerous grants from prestigious organizations, including the National Institutes of Health, the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association. His work was recognized by the Romanian National Academy of Sciences, which named him Most Accomplished Young Scientist (2008).
