As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Mickelsen has established a distinguished career in rural health care administration, marked by a commitment to expanding access and improving services for small communities. Since 2023, he has served as president and chief executive officer of SMP Health, St. Aloisius, where he leads the organization's hospital, nursing home and clinic operations. In this capacity, Mr. Mickelsen has been instrumental in broadening the scope of health care offerings, introducing new surgical specialties, therapy programs, oncology services and mental health care for seniors. He has also revitalized a nursing school to address staffing shortages and spearheaded efforts to recruit and support foreign-born health care professionals, fostering diversity and vitality within the region. His leadership reflects the facility's Christian mission to serve those in need and underscores his belief that outpatient care is essential to sustaining rural health care facilities.
Before his current role, Mr. Mickelsen held several key positions at Tioga Medical Center from 2010 to 2023. As vice president, chief operating officer and chief financial officer, he played a pivotal role in a major construction and expansion project in Tioga in 2015. His efforts led to the development of a new clinic, the expansion of health care services and the launch of a nursing school. Mr. Mickelsen was also instrumental in securing funding and garnering community support for a local tax initiative designed to sustain the facility. This achievement elevated his profile statewide and resulted in appointments to influential boards such as the North Dakota Healthcare Information Network Board, the North Dakota Hospital Association Foundation Board and the Emergency Medical Services Association Board.
From 2007 to 2010, Mr. Mickelsen contributed his expertise at Mountrail County Medical Center, where he further honed his skills in finance and physician relations. Earlier in his career, he gained valuable experience at Meritcare before beginning his professional journey as a certified nurse assistant. These formative roles provided him with firsthand insight into patient care and laid the foundation for his later success as an executive leader.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mickelsen has demonstrated expertise in finance as well as physician relations and services, skills that have been critical to his ability to expand health care offerings and build strong partnerships with medical professionals. His dedication has been recognized through several honors, including Squad of the Year from the North Dakota EMS Association, Service of the Year, and recognition for 10 years of service as a firefighter and emergency medical technician.
Mr. Mickelsen's professional affiliations reflect his commitment to both industry advancement and community engagement. He is a former president of the Tioga Chamber of Commerce, Tioga Freedom Fest Committee, Ray Mall Association and Peaceful Valley Pheasants Forever.
His academic background includes a Master of Arts Certificate in health administration from the University of North Dakota and a Bachelor of Business Administration from the same institution. He also completed additional coursework at the University of North Dakota after graduating from the local high school. Mr. Mickelsen held certifications as a certified nursing assistant and currently holds emergency medical technician. He attributes much of his success to early hands-on experience in patient care roles such as certified nurse assistant and transport aide, positions that instilled in him a deep understanding of the human side of health care. An internship in long-term care led to licensure as an administrator, while work at facilities encompassing hospitals and clinics exposed him to comprehensive models of care delivery.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Mr. Mickelsen is actively involved in civic organizations and volunteer initiatives. He has served as an emergency medical technician volunteer in Kenmare, Tioga, and Harvey, contributed to the board of the North Dakota Hospital Association Foundation and participated on the board of a local ambulance service. His community involvement extends to volunteering with the Farm Festival Committee, chairing the board for Pheasant Forever and serving as a volunteer firefighter with the local fire department.
Among his notable projects is "SMP Health-St. Aloisius: Level of Excellence Unrivaled," which highlights organizational achievements under his leadership.
Born in Kenmare, Mr. Mickelsen values family life alongside his professional commitments; he is a father to five children and enjoys playing golf, baseball, swimming and spending time with his family. Looking ahead, he remains dedicated to expanding essential health care services within his community, including oncology, ear, nose and throat specialties and senior life solutions. He is actively seeking additional providers, such as pediatricians, to meet evolving needs. He has also begun laying the groundwork for significant facility upgrades at SMP Health-St. Aloisius, recognizing the importance of modernizing infrastructure built initially in the 1950s.
Mr. Mickelsen's career stands as a testament to visionary leadership rooted in compassion for patients and dedication to rural communities across North Dakota.
