NEW YORK, NY, November 13, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Alan M. Klinger has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Klinger has established a distinguished career in labor and litigation, earning recognition for his expertise and leadership across several prominent legal institutions. Since 2023, he has served as a partner and chair of the labor group at Steptoe LLP, where he continues to guide clients through complex labor negotiations, contract enforcement, benefits counseling and litigation matters. In this capacity, Mr. Klinger has demonstrated a commitment to advancing the interests of public sector unions, most notably by leading the New York City Municipal Labor Committee and its unions through intricate healthcare agreements.
Under Mr. Klinger's stewardship, New York City workers have maintained a zero-premium contribution for healthcare coverage, a rare achievement nationally, while simultaneously expanding benefits and improving quality. This accomplishment stands as one of the most significant labor successes in recent years, distinguishing Mr. Klinger as a leader in his field.
Prior to joining Steptoe LLP, Mr. Klinger spent more than four decades at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP, from 1982 to 2023, where he held the role of co-managing partner for the last 16 years. Prior to that time, Mr. Klinger also counseled firm clients in complex civil litigation matters. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping the firm's labor and employment practice, representing public sector clients in high-stakes negotiations and litigation. His leadership contributed to the firm's reputation for excellence in labor law and further solidified his standing as an authority in the discipline.
Mr. Klinger began his legal career as a law clerk to Justice Sidney Schreiber at the Supreme Court of New Jersey from 1981 to 1982. This formative experience provided him with invaluable insight into judicial processes and honed his analytical skills, laying the groundwork for his subsequent achievements in private practice.
Throughout his career, Mr. Klinger has been actively involved in numerous professional organizations that reflect his dedication to civil rights, education and community service. He served as chair of the New York/New Jersey regional board of the Anti-Defamation League from 2023 to 2025 and has long co-chaired its New York/New Jersey lawyers division. Additionally, Mr. Klinger has been a trustee of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the New York University School of Law and the New York University Labor & Employment Center.
Mr. Klinger served by initial appointment of Governor Paterson on the board of trustees for the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation from 2010-2018, the last four years acting as chair, allowing him to contribute to advancing educational opportunities statewide. He also serves as director for United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Mr. Klinger's professional credentials are further underscored by membership in the New York Bar Foundation.
Mr. Klinger's academic background has been instrumental in shaping his approach to legal practice and negotiation. He earned a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law in 1981 after completing an AB in American history, magna cum laude, at Princeton University in 1978. He credits his education at Princeton University with instilling critical thinking skills, emphasizing analysis over acceptance, and his education at NYU Law School for fostering an ability to understand opposing viewpoints, both essential qualities that have underpinned his success as a negotiator and litigator.
Complementing his professional commitments, Mr. Klinger has demonstrated a sustained dedication to civic engagement and philanthropy. He has served as a director of Partnership with Children Inc. from 1998 to 2023, supporting initiatives that benefit youth and families throughout New York City. He also has long served as pro bono outside counsel to both The Supreme Court Justices Association of the City of New York and the Association of Justices of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, which have made him an honorary member. He also serves as a Labor Member of the New York City Board of Collective Bargaining, a statutorily-designated tripartite body that oversees labor/management relations for New York City's municipal workforce.
Mr. Klinger's contributions have been recognized with several prestigious awards. He received the Cornerstone Award from the Lawyers Alliance for his pro bono work with Partnership with Children and the Edward Brodsky award from ADL for his work in advancing the interests of that organization. He has earned a Band One ranking from Chambers, as well as prominent rankings from Legal 500 and Benchmark Litigation. He is perennially included among Best Lawyers for labor and employment and in City & State New York's Labor Power 100 and Law Power 100, and in NY Metro Super Lawyers.
Known for his creative contributions, Mr. Klinger's impact extends beyond his professional practice into publishing and organizational leadership. He has served as editor-in-chief of the NYU Law School Moot Court Board, editorial chairman of The Daily Princetonian and president of Temple Israel of Great Neck.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Klinger enjoys traveling and watching sports outside his professional commitments. Looking ahead, he aims to continue supporting public sector unions through challenging times, contribute meaningfully to his community, and fulfill his role as a grandparent (the best job of all).
