Since 2024, Ms. Slayton has also served as an independent business owner with Amway in Massachusetts, where she applies her entrepreneurial skills to new ventures with The Sunshine Line. A lifelong teacher and learner, this new asset expands her adeptness in business, by further developing trust in her communities, prioritizing wellness, diversifying financial options, and placing a greater value on success mentorship and accountability.
Ms. Slayton has been an English teacher at Abington Public Schools since 2018, where she imparts knowledge and inspires students in the classroom. Her commitment to education extends beyond teaching, further demonstrated by her role as a yearbook advisor with Lifetouch beginning in 2019, where she guides students in documenting their academic journeys and achievements. As of this year, Ms. Slayton co-advises Abington High School's new Equity and Inclusion Club, and she held the position of junior varsity volleyball coach at the high school in 2018, fostering leadership, teamwork and athletic development among students. That same year, she contributed as a long-term substitute teacher at Whitman-Hanson Regional High School within the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District, demonstrating adaptability and commitment to student success.
Her experience includes serving as a substitute teacher for Brockton Public Schools in 2018 and for Quincy Public Schools from 2017 to 2018, where she supported various educational needs across different grade levels. In 2017, Ms. Slayton was an assistant basketball coach with Brockton Community Schools Raise Up Program in Brockton, Massachusetts, where she encouraged youth participation in athletics.
From 2012 to 2019, Ms. Slayton worked as kitchen staff at Venus Cafe in Whitman, Massachusetts. This role provided her with valuable experience in teamwork and customer service within a fast-paced environment.
Ms. Slayton's academic background includes a Master of Arts in Teaching in English from Bridgewater State University, earned in 2022. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and language arts teacher education from Westfield State University, graduating summa cum laude in 2017. Her academic achievements have been instrumental in shaping her approach to teaching and entrepreneurship.
Beyond her professional roles, Ms. Slayton is actively involved with civic-minded organizations such as organizing Black youth arts and education fundraisers, benefitting the Boys & Girls Club of Metro South and OrigiNation Cultural Arts Center. These affiliations reflect her commitment to supporting youth development and cultural enrichment within her community.
Ms. Slayton's accomplishments have been recognized through several awards, including placement on the Dean's List in 2017 and receiving the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award from The Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Senate and House of Representatives in 2014. She attributes her success to maintaining a growth mindset, nurturing curiosity and remaining open to new experiences—qualities that have propelled her professional journey.
Ms. Slayton has contributed to academic discourse as a conference speaker for the National Council of Teachers of English in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2016 and for the South Atlantic Modern Language Association in Atlanta, Georgia, sharing her insights with peers and advancing educational practices.
Outside of her professional pursuits, Ms. Slayton enjoys reading, experimenting in the creative process, and connecting with business mentors and professionals during her personal time. Looking ahead, she plans to complete the build of her local art space, The Sunshine Studio, and host a grand opening event while developing a calendar of creative offerings for the community. She intends to teach classes and use her studio space as a gathering place for craft events and wellness offerings like yoga, continuing her lifelong commitment to fostering connection and learning beyond traditional school settings.
