NEW HARMONY, IN, November 24, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Laura Foster Nicholson has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Ms. Nicholson is a leading figure in the field of tapestry weaving, dedicating more than four decades to the advancement of the textile arts. Since 1982, she has served as the owner and fine art weaver at LFN Textiles, where she manages all aspects of the business, including communications, textile and fabric design, commissioned works and the creation of original pieces rooted in her personal artistic vision. Her expertise in tapestry weaving is widely recognized, and she is celebrated for developing a unique, finely detailed technique that has become her signature since 1980. Her work often explores intricate, image-oriented themes, with recent projects addressing climate change and environmental issues such as the flooding of Venice and the impacts of industrial agriculture. Earlier series drew inspiration from formal gardens and architecture, reflecting her enduring interest in these subjects.

A pivotal moment in Ms. Nicholson's career occurred in 1985 when she was awarded one of 10 prestigious prizes at the Venice Biennale of Architecture for a series of tapestries centered on Villa Farsetti near Venice, Italy. These works, which depicted the villa's gardens, stables and outbuildings, garnered international attention and led to significant gallery representation and media coverage across Europe and the United States. This recognition contributed to her inclusion in Who's Who in American Art and solidified her reputation as an innovative artist within the global textile community.

In addition to her studio practice, Ms. Nicholson has contributed to the field through teaching and mentorship. From 2003 to 2005, she was adjunct faculty for applications for textiles at Harrington College of Design in Chicago, specializing in weaving instruction. She previously held a similar role from 1990 to 1994 as adjunct faculty in the fiber department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she balanced her teaching responsibilities with an active studio life. Throughout her career, she has also led seminars, taught workshops and served as a visiting artist at various institutions, sharing her knowledge with emerging artists.

Ms. Nicholson's professional affiliations reflect her commitment to advancing textile arts. She has been a member of the Surface Design Association since 1976 and is also affiliated with the Handweavers Guild of America and American Crafts. Her involvement extends beyond professional organizations; she has served as a juror for events such as the St. Louis Art Fair and participated regularly in museum exhibitions at venues including the Nelson Museum in Kansas City and the Cranbrook Museum. Her work has also been featured at Navy Pier art shows in Chicago.

Ms. Nicholson's academic background laid a strong foundation for her achievements. She earned a Master of Fine Arts in fiber, textile and weaving arts from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in 1982. She previously completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in fiber, textile and weaving arts at the Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City in 1976. The support from both alma maters has been instrumental throughout her career; notably, the Kansas City Art Institute recently invited her to showcase her work at their all-school reunion and expressed interest in representing her pieces in their gallery store.

Ms. Nicholson's civic engagement is equally notable. She has volunteered on committees and for community festivals, contributed to charitable initiatives and played a foundational role as the founding chair of the Arts in Harmony Annual Festival under New Harmony Business Associates from 2009 to 2017. Her leadership helped foster a vibrant artistic community in New Harmony, Indiana, where she relocated after raising two children in Chicago. There, she also founded an art fair and served in various roles within an artist guild.

Ms. Nicholson's creative output includes published articles such as "A Series of Articles About the Use of Color in Textiles on a Structural Level" for Shuttle, Spindle, and Dyepot by the Handweavers Guild of America in 2013 and a contribution to "Pantone View" by View Publications in the Netherlands that same year. Her accolades include a craft award, an excellence in weaving award in 1997 and recognition at the Venice Biennale of Architecture.

Born in Waukegan, Illinois, Ms. Nicholson comes from a family with a rich history of artistry. She is the mother of two children: a son who is an architect and a daughter who majored in psychology and balances a creative online presence with a career as an accountant. Her former husband is a well-known arts professor. She enjoys arts, weaving and cooking.

Looking ahead, Ms. Nicholson remains committed to creating art by hand and staying deeply engaged in the creative process. She is currently undergoing a significant artistic shift from representational work toward a more abstract visual language, distilling landscapes into evocative forms inspired by both natural beauty and ecological challenges. Her evolving vision continues to be fueled by careful observation and emotional response to her surroundings, particularly the dramatic skies and farmlands of the Midwest.
