ROUGEMONT, NC, December 23, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Patricia Melton, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Melton has established herself as an expert in forensic genetics, a distinction earned through a career marked by significant contributions to science and public service. Her most recent role as the project director and principal scientist at RTI International from 2013 to 2025 stands as a testament to her leadership and technical acumen. In this capacity, Dr. Melton guided multidisciplinary teams on complex research initiatives, shaping policy and advancing scientific understanding in forensic applications. Her work at RTI International was characterized by a commitment to innovation and the practical application of genetic science to real-world challenges.

Prior to her tenure at RTI International, Dr. Melton served as associate professor and forensic scientist in residence at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina, from 2010 to 2013. During this period, she played a pivotal role in developing academic programs and mentoring students, fostering the next generation of forensic scientists. Her dedication to education extended beyond the classroom, as she frequently engaged with young professionals and students through college career days, presentations and workshops designed to ignite interest in science among elementary school children.

Earlier in her career, between 2006 and 2010, Dr. Melton contributed her expertise as a senior forensic analyst for the Baltimore County Police Department. In this position, she was responsible for conducting advanced forensic analyses that supported criminal investigations, ensuring the integrity of evidence and upholding rigorous scientific standards.

Dr. Melton's career began with the Department of Defense at the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory from 2002 to 2006. It was here that she achieved what she considers her most significant professional accomplishment: her work in human identification. This role held deep personal resonance due to her own family's military background and experiences with loss during wars and conflicts. Dr. Melton worked closely with families seeking closure for loved ones lost in service, including those whose relatives disappeared during World War II. The impact of this work, helping families find answers after generations, remains a defining element of her legacy.

At the outset of her career, Dr. Melton pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Michigan in 1992, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in molecular biology and genetics from Wayne State University in 2000. These academic achievements provided the scientific grounding necessary for her subsequent successes in both research and applied forensic science.

Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Melton attributes much of her success to the influence of informal mentors encountered along the way. These individuals, though not always professors or traditional guides, inspired her to recognize the potential for meaningful work that strengthens communities and enhances public safety. Dr. Melton emphasizes that, regardless of doubts or questions about one's ability or purpose, the most important step is to embrace the moment and take action. She encourages approaching challenges with courage, for there is little to lose and much to gain.

Beyond her professional pursuits, Dr. Melton is civically engaged as a volunteer with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and supports organizations such as Make-A-Wish Foundation and Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network through charitable donations. Her commitment to service reflects a broader dedication to improving lives both within and outside her field.

Born in Ypsilanti, Dr. Melton enjoys gardening as a personal pastime. Looking ahead, she intends to remain active in legislative and policy efforts related to sexual violence, emphasizing community education on recognizing abuse, supporting victims and developing resources that foster prevention and accountability.
