Dr. Jacobs' tenure as sports psychologist for USA Cycling from 1982 to 1986 and again in 1988 marked a significant chapter in his career. He provided mental performance coaching and psychological support to the United States Cycling Team at several World Championships in Switzerland in 1983, Italy in 1985, and Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1986. Dr. Jacobs's most notable achievement during this period was his pivotal role in the team's historic success at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where the United States Olympic cycling team secured nine medals after a 72-year drought. This accomplishment brought him national recognition, including an appearance on "Good Morning America" during the Olympics. Dr. Jacobs regards this milestone as one of his proudest professional moments.
Dr. Jacobs first consulting job as a sports psychologist was with the University of Kansas men's and women's track teams in 1981 through 1983, where he played an instrumental role in helping the men's track and field team secure Big Eight indoor and outdoor championship titles in 1982. His work with these teams resulted in his being named the sport psychologist for the entire Kansas Athletic Department until 1985. Dr. Jacobs was one of the first sport psychologists in baseball with the 1990 Kansas City Royals and again from 2008 to 2011. He has also worked with the Chicago White Sox minor league, Kansas City Comets indoor soccer team, the Kansas City Current women's soccer team and has been the sport psychologist at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. Jacobs was the team psychologist for the Kansas City Blazers swim team from 1983 to 2013 and has spoken to the USA swimming and weightlifting federations, as well as presented for the PGA and USTA.
Dr. Jacobs's foundational experiences include internships with the men's tennis team and women's gymnastics team at San Diego State University during his graduate studies. These formative roles allowed him to witness firsthand the transformative impact of mental training on athletic performance.
Highly educated, Dr. Jacobs's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Vanderbilt University in 1976. He continued his studies at the California School of Professional Psychology in San Diego, earning both a master's degree and a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology with specialization in sports psychology by 1981.
Notably, Dr. Jacobs' passion for sports psychology was ignited during graduate coursework under Dr. Robert Nideffer using "The Inner Athlete" textbook. This experience led him to focus his doctoral dissertation on jockeys' personality characteristics, a subject influenced by his family's equestrian background, and solidified by his impactful internship at San Diego State University.
Dr. Jacobs is an active member of the American Psychological Association and the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, reflecting his ongoing commitment to professional excellence within his field. His contributions extend to authorship and creative projects. In 2015, Dr. Jacobs co-authored "Just Let 'em Play: Guiding Parents, Coaches and Athletes Through Youth Sports," published by Ascend Books, offering guidance for navigating youth athletics. He is also the creator of relaxation and visualization audio programs designed specifically for athletes.
Throughout his career, Dr. Jacobs has supported professional athletes such as Nick Lowery, Mitch Morse, Bo Jackson, George Brett and Tom Gordon, as well as collegiate athletes like Paul Titus, who he helped break personal barriers in high jumping and collegiate swimmer, Tammy Thomas, who broke NCAA records. Despite these high-profile successes, Dr. Jacobs finds his greatest fulfillment in guiding individuals of all ages to achieve their personal goals and improve their self-esteem.
Dr. Jacobs' achievements have been recognized through multiple awards, including nine Olympic medals earned by USA Cycling under his guidance at the 1984 Games and Big Eight indoor and outdoor championship titles for men's track and field at the University of Kansas.
