Dr. Mebrahtu has established herself as an expert in international public health nutrition programming and evaluation, amassing three decades of experience across governmental organizations, the United Nations and non-governmental organizations. Her career is distinguished by her leadership in designing, managing, monitoring and evaluating large-scale multisector programs throughout Africa and Asia. These initiatives have consistently demonstrated measurable improvements in the well-being of vulnerable populations, including women, children, the elderly and individuals with disabilities.

During her most recent tenure at World Vision Australia from 2024 to 2025, Dr. Mebrahtu served as acting head of impact and strategy and as senior lead for the impact evidence-building and impact reporting strategy teams. In this capacity, she provided strategic direction to multidisciplinary teams responsible for capturing, utilizing and communicating evidence of impact within World Vision Australia and on behalf of World Vision International. She managed two cross-functional teams, fostering enterprise engagement and collaboration through agile methodologies. Dr. Mebrahtu ensured that World Vision Australia's evidence-building agenda aligned with global requirements and led the articulation and application of the World Vision International global impact framework. Her efforts facilitated strong collaboration between technical staff and country impact managers, supporting current and future programs with robust evidence frameworks.

From 2020 to 2025, Dr. Mebrahtu also served as an evidence-building adviser at World Vision Australia, focusing on food security, health, and nutrition. She played a pivotal role in developing strategies to monitor progress through initiatives such as the Our Impact Our Story Reporting platform.

Before her work at World Vision Australia, Dr. Mebrahtu held dual roles from 2017 to 2020: program lead for the Oxfam-Monash Partnership at the Monash Sustainable Development Institute, Monash University, and head of research and knowledge translation at Oxfam Australia. In these positions, she advanced the translation of research into practice and fostered partnerships between academia and humanitarian organizations.

Her consultancy work in Kalorama, Australia, from 2016 to 2017 with the UN Nutrition and UNICEF further expanded her expertise in inclusive development programming. During this period, she provided independent advisory services on multi-sectoral nutrition program design, monitoring and evaluation.

Dr. Mebrahtu's earlier career is marked by significant contributions to UNICEF across multiple countries. As chief of the child development and nutrition section in India from 2014 to 2016, she led participatory design and evaluation of nutrition programs targeting national priorities. From 2011 to 2014, she was chief of the nutrition section in Nepal, where she was instrumental in raising the profile of nutrition on the national development agenda. Her advocacy efforts led the government to prioritize investment in child nutrition—an achievement that secured high-level leadership support for multi-sectoral nutrition plans. Notably, her work in Nepal facilitated inter-ministerial collaboration under the prime minister's leadership, ensuring successful implementation.

From 2004 to 2011, Dr. Mebrahtu served as regional nutrition advisor at UNICEF's Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office in Nairobi, Kenya. She supported countries across the region in developing multisectoral strategies to address hygiene practices, gender dynamics, economic empowerment, and agricultural involvement—factors critical to improving child growth outcomes.

Her earlier assignments included serving as a health and nutrition project officer for UNICEF China from 1998 to 2004, during which she contributed to program management and evaluation. From 1996 to 1998, she worked as a monitoring and evaluation officer—and later acting head of planning, monitoring and evaluation—for UNICEF Eritrea.

Throughout her career, Dr. Mebrahtu has built partnerships with philanthropic organizations as well as education and research entities. She is recognized for leading participatory evaluations that inform programming improvements and policy advocacy efforts aimed at scaling up support for vulnerable communities. She has also strengthened the capacities of civil society organizations, government agencies, private-sector partners, and community leaders to co-design effective community-based programs.

Her professional journey includes invitations to present at workshops and conferences globally from 2017 to 2024. Dr. Mebrahtu's expertise has been sought after in Australia, Eritrea, India, Kenya, Nepal, Pakistan, the People's Republic of China, and the United States.

She has shared her expertise and contributed to professional discussions with her peers through several industry-related organizations, including the World Public Health Nutrition Association, the Nutrition Congress and the Micronutrient Forum.

Dr. Mebrahtu's academic background has been foundational to her achievements. She earned a Doctor of Philosophy in population and development, with a research focus on the social determinants of child nutrition, from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, in 1994. She holds a Master of Science in nutrition and food science with a focus on women's work related to infant feeding from South Dakota State University in Brookings South Dakota awarded in 1989; a Master of Science in biology with emphasis on plant anatomy and physiology from South Dakota State University completed in 1984; and a Bachelor of Science in biology chemistry and physics from Sioux Falls College (now University of Sioux Falls) conferred in Sioux Falls South Dakota in 1981.

Her commitment to continuous learning is reflected by certifications, including a Statistical Package for the Social Sciences refresher online course completed in 2022; research communication training received in 2018; gender and development certification obtained in 2017; ethics training completed in 2013; executive coaching through iDiscoveri Education achieved in 2012; as well as e-courses on supervisory skills from Leadership Development Institute undertaken from 2010 to 2011.

Dr. Mebrahtu attributes her success to her parents' guidance—particularly inspired by her mother's health consciousness—and to the encouragement of her grandfather, who emphasized balanced diets for family well-being. Her father played a pivotal role by ensuring equal educational opportunities for all his children, regardless of gender. This value shaped Dr. Mebrahtu's pursuit of academic excellence despite societal expectations.

Her dedication has been recognized through honors such as membership in the Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta and Alpha Kappa Delta International Honor Societies.

Born in Asmara, Dr. Mebrahtu enjoys growing her own food and herbs—a reflection of her lifelong commitment to holistic health practices. Looking ahead, she aims to collaborate with her community by offering holistic health services, including nutrient-rich food production, preparation, nutritional guidance, energy healing, and exercise and relaxation techniques.
