MIAMI BEACH, FL, May 13, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Donald W. Chan has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Donald Chan has established a distinguished career spanning six decades in the performing arts, holding the titles of musical director, pianist, composer and conductor. Since 1985, he has served as a musical director through his company, Donald Chan Inc., where his responsibilities include conducting orchestras, directing musical theater productions, playing piano for performances, teaching music privately and managing community activities. In this capacity, Maestro. Chan has continued to expand his repertoire as a jazz pianist, performing in notable venues such as the Governor's House in Olympia, Washington and collaborating with acclaimed artists, including Michael Feinstein.
From 2004 to 2020, Maestro Chan was the musical supervisor and principal conductor for the "West Side Story" World Tour, Euro/Asian Centennial Production. This role further solidified his reputation as an authority on Leonard Bernstein's celebrated work. His expertise with "West Side Story" is internationally recognized, particularly for his direction of the landmark 2000 production at La Scala Opera Company in Milan, Italy. This event marked the first time La Scala staged the work, and its immense popularity was evidenced by sold-out performances within days of opening. Maestro Chan returned to direct another special production at La Scala in 2003.
Prior to these achievements, Donald Chan served for 8 years as music director for the Municipal Theater Association of St. Louis, where he led numerous large-scale productions and contributed significantly to the region's cultural landscape. Earlier in his career, he was a professor at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, beginning in 1970, where he educated aspiring musicians while remaining active in summer theater productions.
Donald Chan's early professional journey began after earning his master's degree from The Juilliard School in 1964. During his studies, he worked as a rehearsal pianist in musical theater and was introduced to Cohasset, Massachusetts, by a friend. There, he stepped into the role of assistant conductor at Summer Theater when the regular conductor became ill in 1963. This pivotal experience launched his lifelong commitment to the performing arts. He subsequently became assistant conductor at the Municipal Opera Theater in St. Louis and took on roles as an off-Broadway musical director.
Throughout his career, Maestro Chan has collaborated with renowned performers such as Gene Kelly, Ethel Merman, Chita Rivera, Carol Lawrence, Lauren Bacall, Joel Grey, Len Cariou, Sid Caesar and Martha Graham. Notably, he made history as the first Asian musician to conduct a Broadway musical when he performed with Joel Grey in "Cabaret" in 1989. His extensive credits also include performances at American Conservatory Theater, The Cleveland Opera Inc., Seattle Opera and Seattle Repertory Theatre.
Donald Chan's creative output encompasses serving as music director for major productions including "Cabaret," "Kiss of the Spider Woman," "The Pirates of Penzance" and "Phantom of the Opera." He has provided music for plays by Ibsen and Brecht and co-scored the PBS documentary "March of the Living." As a composer and piano soloist — most notably performing Leonard Bernstein's "Symphony No. 2: The Age of Anxiety" with The San Jose Symphony - which in fact was the West Coast premiere of the composition — he has demonstrated versatility across genres and formats. Notably, Maestro Chan's contributions have been recognized with multiple musical director awards from various theaters throughout his career.
Donald Chan's academic foundation was laid at The Juilliard School, where he earned both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in piano and conducting by 1964. In 1970, he completed his doctoral work at the University of Colorado. The rigorous training and mentorship received there were instrumental in shaping his technical proficiency and artistic vision. Maestro Chan credits much of his success to supportive friends and colleagues who recognized his talent early on and provided opportunities that propelled him forward.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Maestro Chan is an active member of Musician's Union of New York and volunteers with hospital music programs, where he brings comfort to patients through music. He manages a tennis group comprising 16 players who compete regularly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Outside of his professional commitments, he enjoys playing jazz piano and teaching music privately.
