Most recently, he served as a professor of clinical surgery at the University of California (UC), Davis, from 2002 to 2019, where he taught medical students, residents, fellows, and surgical trainees. During those same years, Dr. Hundahl also held the position of chief of surgery for the VA Northern California Health Care System, Department of Veterans Affairs. In this position, he developed multiple successful clinical collaborations between the VA and the U.S. Department of Defense, furthering the integration and quality of veteran health services.
Before his tenure in California, Dr. Hundahl was an associate clinical professor of surgery at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii at Manoa between 1996 and 2002. His leadership extended to The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu as an associate chief of surgery from 1993 to 1995 and chief of surgery between 1994 and 2000. Concurrently, Dr. Hundahl contributed as an assistant research professor and research staff at the Cancer Research Center Hawaii in Honolulu from 1993 to 2002.
Earlier, Dr. Hundahl formed his own private practice in surgical oncology in Honolulu in 1988, which he maintained until 2002, providing specialized care to patients with complex oncologic needs. He began his academic career as an assistant professor of surgery from 1988 to 1993.
In addition to his extensive clinical and academic background, a significant highlight in Dr. Hundahl's professional journey has been his role as the co-founder and lifetime director of Comprehensive Home Services Hawaii (now CareResource Hawaii), beginning in 1986 and continuing through the present day. Under his guidance, the organization grew into the largest nonprofit home healthcare agency in Hawaii, employing more than 230 staff members and greatly enhancing patient care accessibility and quality across Oahu and Molokai. Notably, Dr. Hundahl also serves as a lifetime board member for the facility.
Among other opportunities, Dr. Hundahl played a pivotal role in shaping cancer care policy and data management nationally. As the chair of the Commission on Cancer from 1998 to 2000, a consortium representing approximately 55 cancer organizations across the U.S., he led efforts to unify diverse stakeholders around common standards for cancer treatment and data collection. His leadership was instrumental in advancing national cancer databases and improving research infrastructure. Earlier, Dr. Hundahl served as the vice chair of both the Commission on Cancer between 1996 and 1998 and the National Cancer Data Committee from 1994 to 1996. Additionally, he was a member of the governing council for the National Cancer Database between 1995 and 1999 and contributed internationally as a member of the Union Internationale Contre le Cancer's International Cancer Data Base Committee from 1995 to 1998.
Dr. Hundahl's academic foundation is equally distinguished. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, magna cum laude, from Harvard University in Cambridge in 1977 before completing a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven in 1981. He then completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu in 1986, followed by a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City in 1988. Dr. Hundahl holds board certification from both the American Board of Surgery Inc. and the National Board of Medical Examiners.
Among numerous professional affiliations that reflect his commitment to surgical excellence and collaboration across disciplines, Dr. Hundahl is a fellow of several prestigious organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Head and Neck Society and the Pacific Coast Surgical Association. Additional memberships include the International Gastric Cancer Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Sacramento Surgical Society, where he is notably a past president. Dr. Hundahl held leadership roles with several organizations as well.
Civically engaged, Dr. Hundahl has been active with such organizations as the American Cancer Society Inc. in various positions, including past president for the Honolulu unit and former member of its national task force on privacy of medical records. He has also been affiliated with The Pacific Club, St. Botolph Club and Nantucket Yacht Club.
As a researcher, Dr. Hundahl's scholarly output included authoring over 60 journal articles, contributing more than 20 book chapters, and reviewing manuscripts for multiple professional journals. He also served as the medical editor for the Journal of Registry Management between 2000 and 2008.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hundahl has been recognized for pioneering research that has changed patterns of care for gastric cancer patients worldwide. His work in computer-guided surgery for gastric cancer established the Maruyama Index as a surgical quality metric and advanced the use of adjuvant chemo-radiation therapy to improve survival rates. These contributions have helped usher in an era marked by more precise treatments, minimally invasive procedures and enhanced cancer survival rates, trends Dr. Hundahl has both witnessed and shaped.
Dr. Hundahl's achievements have been recognized with numerous honors, including a Distinguished Service Award by the American College of Surgeons in 2000, a Nishi Award for best paper in gastric cancer by the International Gastric Cancer Association in 2008, a Joan Oettinger Memorial Award at the school of medicine at UC Davis in 2009 and, among others, recognition in Best Doctors in America between 1995 and 2020. He was also named Honorary Commander with the 60th Medical Group at Travis Air Force Base from 2014 to 2016. Additionally, Dr. Hundahl was recognized as a Top Educator by Marquis Who's Who representing the field of healthcare, and he has been included in the 52nd, 63rd, 71st and 72nd editions of Who's Who in America.
