Rev. Smith-Toven's military service began in 2003 when he joined the U.S. Army as an Army band officer. Over the course of his distinguished career, he rose to become a commander and conductor of the West Point Band, culminating in what he considers his most notable professional achievement. Rev. Smith-Toven's leadership and musicianship were recognized throughout his tenure, leaving a lasting impact on the institution and its members.
In preparation for his future, Rev. Smith-Toven earned two bachelor's degrees and three master's degrees, including a Master of Divinity from Bexley Seabury Seminary in Chicago. His comprehensive education has provided a strong foundation for both his musical and ministerial pursuits. Rev. Smith-Toven is also an ordained Episcopal priest, a credential that has enabled him to serve communities both within and beyond West Point.
Throughout his career, Rev. Smith-Toven has been an active member of the American Choral Directors Association, further demonstrating his commitment to advancing choral music education and performance. He also contributes to the broader music community as a board member and military representative to the board of the National Band Association. Civic engagement has also been central to Rev. Smith-Toven's life. He serves as the priest-in-charge at Holy Innocents Parish in Highland Falls, New York, where he leads parish ministry and oversees campus ministry at the U.S. Military Academy.
Rev. Smith-Toven's creative projects include notable performances at the White House, nationally televised sports events, in capitals across Europe, and leading the West Point Band in a command performance for the members of the United Nations in the UN General Assembly Hall in 2023. He also performed in the "Darien Concert with West Point Band Reunites Commander, Former Student," which highlighted his ongoing influence in connecting generations of musicians.
In recognition of his achievements, Rev. Smith-Toven has received several prestigious honors. He garnered Distinguished Alma Mater recognition from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2023. He was also recognized with a Legion of Merit from the U.S. Army for his distinguished service. Rev. Smith-Toven credits his success to the unwavering support of his husband, Kevin Smith-Toven, a civil engineer specializing in water infrastructure and climate resiliency, as well as to the mentors who have generously shared their time and expertise throughout his journey.
Looking ahead, Rev. Smith-Toven aims to strengthen both Holy Innocents Parish and campus ministry at West Point by establishing a robust Episcopal presence within these communities. He is also dedicated to expanding the glee club to provide cadets with enriching musical opportunities throughout their academic journey while continuing his work as a guest conductor nationwide.
