January 09, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nobody should have to live in a marriage where they are being bullied, intimidated and physically harmed. Yet tragically, millions of people across the United States are victims of domestic violence. The problem is severe in New York: According to the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, there were 28,365 new domestic violence cases heard in courts across the state in 2012.

People who are suffering from family abuse may desperately want to get out of their situation and protect their children. However, it can be very difficult to escape from a violent marriage. Abusers use intimidation, threats and other tactics to control their victims, until they're completely dependent on the other person. When attempting to escape an abusive marriage, victims must take careful steps to stay safe.

How abuse affects children

Growing up in an abusive household can have lifelong effects. Boys who experience abuse often grow up to abuse their own spouses and children, while girls are more likely to become victims of abuse as adults. Therefore, it's crucial for the abused parent to end the marriage and get to a safe place to break this cycle of violence.

It can be hard to recognize many of the early signs of an abusive spouse. According to HelpGuide, verbal and emotional abuse can be more scary and confusing than physical violence, because victims often don't realize it's abuse until things get worse. They may blame themselves for making the other person angry, especially since abusers often project the blame onto their victims. The National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence says that abusers may also show extreme jealousy, keep their victims from seeing loved ones, hit or break objects in anger, threaten to harm or kidnap the children and display unpredictable changes in behavior.

Victims of abuse will need to take the following steps to escape a violent relationship:
- Get a protective order against the abuser.
- Gather important documents, emergency money, clothing and belongings, and keep them somewhere safe.
- Record each instance of abuse, especially getting pictures of bruises and other injuries.
- Create an escape plan to get away.
- Memorize the phone numbers of emergency shelters, police stations and abuse hotlines.

SafeHorizon says that one out of every four women will experience domestic violence at some point during her life. Many facilities exist throughout New York that can help women and children with emergency housing, counseling and getting help from law enforcement.

How an attorney can help

Family members and friends can provide an invaluable source of support and safety during the difficult process of divorcing an abuser. It's also important to contact an experienced divorce attorney right away, who can help with vital issues such as child custody and child support.
