WINTER SPRINGS, FL, February 18, 2012
/24-7PressRelease/ -- The electronic cigarette industry is under fire again, but this time for a different reason: product safety. They are made to produce a sensation that is very similar to smoking and while many people are making the switch, most people who purchase the products rarely deviate from the intended advertised use.
Recently, however, a Florida man had a tragic accident involving an e cigarette that may have changed his life forever. Monday evening, February 13, Tom Holloway was in his home office using an e cigarette when it exploded tragically causing severe damage by exploding in his mouth. Damage included a home fire, the loss of several teeth, and part of his tongue. This event has brought into question the safety of e cigarettes for public use, but there is more to the story than the limited information syndicated and reported on thus far.
E cigarettes have been on the market in the United States since around 2006 and while there have been reports of explosions concerning the products as they are sold, what the report out of Florida fails to reveal in most of its incarnations on the web is that the e cigarette used by Tom Holloway was likely the result of a "mod" or "personal modification" of the battery. The only explosions that are currently known about have resulted directly from the modification of the products on the user end, typically done by individuals with little, if any, engineering or electrical skills.
"People are already aware of the risk that they're taking when they start messing around with electrical components of anything they purchase, whether it's a cell phone, e cigarette, or a microwave," says Amanda of
Ecigarettesjunction.com. "Think about it... why would a person with no electrical or engineering skills attempt to modify a battery that they're going to be putting in front of their face? Garage mods are what is getting people hurt, because they're not using the products as they were intended to be used and it violates the most warranties for them to make those modifications, anyway. E cigarettes were engineered by professionals to be used by consumers, not to be dangerously modified by amateurs in a mix 'n' match fashion."
Many electronic items on the market today are modified by their end users who want the product to provide more battery life, faster speed, or otherwise higher performance capabilities that it was not designed to endure. E cigarette companies who have SGS certifications on their products have all met or surpassed the necessary stress tests on their batteries to ensure that they are safe to use for their intended purpose.
"CBSNews reported that the man in Florida wanted the burnt case back, but the division fire chief, Joseph Parker, also said that Mr. Holloway didn't say why he specifically wanted that particular item returned," says Amanda. "They also say that they don't know what brand he was using... how exactly could he not know what brand he was using when it exploded in his face? Believe me, if a name brand battery exploded in my face, someone would know whose it was."
Modifications of products sold in the United States are common, from cell phones being "jailbreaked" all the way to people who modify their vehicles with nitrous oxide, a dangerous gas used to vastly increase the amount of fuel a vehicle is capable of burning. Injuries that directly result from user modifications on any type of product are not uncommon overall, especially when
directly encouraged by
user forums and message boards across multiple industries.
