Untapped Potential & Opportunities for Growth: African Leaders to Meet President Obama for Historic Summit

CD Global Strategies Group partners with government & private sector leaders to promote & strengthen US-Africa cooperation
WASHINGTON, DC, August 05, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On Monday, President Obama welcomes nearly 50 African heads of state to Washington, DC for the first ever US-Africa Leaders Summit (#AfricaSummit.) This Summit offers an unprecedented opportunity to reach more than 1 billion potential consumers and strengthen partnerships to address some of the world's most pressing humanitarian and security crises.

"This is an exciting time for US-Africa relations," said Calvin Dark, President of CD Global Strategies Group (CDGS) during preparations for the Summit. "This Summit has the potential to create and strengthen political, security, humanitarian and economic partnerships that will enrich the lives of millions in the US and across the African continent."

Ahead of the Summit, CDGS organized the US visit of Burkina Faso's Minister of Human Rights to meet with members of Congress, NGOs, think tanks, media, and other policy makers to highlight the challenges that African countries face to protect human rights and underscore the importance of increased international cooperation and partnerships.

In order to tackle the formidable humanitarian and security challenges across the continent - from the instability in Libya, the conflict in Northern Mali and the threat of extremist groups in Nigeria, "The US must broaden its security partnerships and intelligently cooperate in order to combat these growing threats to US interests in the region," said Charles Caldwell, Vice President of Consulting Services for CDGS.

"Africa also faces many obstacles to women's equality, which hamper development and progress," said Rasheedah Thomas, CDGS' Vice President of Programs & Outreach. "However, there are also encouraging examples across the continent where great strides are being made to protect and promote the rights of women and young girls." In fact, African countries have some of the highest representation of women in legislative bodies and ministries in the world including 3 women heads of state and a dozen vice-presidents over the last 3 decades.

Energy will be a major focus of the Summit, particularly how to support and strengthen President Obama's "Power Africa," a $7 billion initiative over 5 years launched last year that seeks to double access to power in sub-Saharan Africa.

"From responsible use of fossil fuels to the investment in and development of renewable resources such as wind and solar, there are multiple avenues for US companies to partner and profit from these opportunities," said Luke James, Vice President of Development at CDGS.
