Nirmalya Thakur Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Computer Science

Mr. Thakur conducts breakthrough research in computer science in his role with the University of Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, OH, October 29, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nirmalya Thakur has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

In pursuit of fulfilling a long-standing dream to contribute to Research and Development, Mr. Nirmalya Thakur left his home country India to come to the United States, in the year 2017 as a master's student in Computer Science in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at the University of Cincinnati (UC). Being the stellar performer that he is, today, he is well on his path to a PhD in the same discipline. Over the years, Mr. Thakur's Research and Development accomplishments have brought him several laurels – within the first 4 months of starting his master's degree, he published his first paper at the 8th Annual Computing and Communication Workshop and Conference (CCWC) organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Over the years as an accomplished researcher, Mr. Thakur realized that his true passion is contributing to the sections of the society that are more distanced from this fantastic era of technology, thus he realized that his true calling focuses on improving the quality of lives of elderly people in the future of Smart Homes. Nirmalya has been doing interdisciplinary research exploring the intersections of Human-Computer Interaction, Robotics, Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Assistive Systems, Affective Computing, Blockchain and their applications in the context of solving real-world problems.

Due to his illustrious research background, Mr. Thakur has been invited to present his research in several conferences organized by IEEE and Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) across United States and Canada which include the 8th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT), the 9th Annual Information Technology, Electronics and Mobile Communication Conference (IEMCON), the IEEE 5G World Forum Conference (IEEE 5GWF), the 8th Annual Computing and Communication Workshop and Conference (CCWC) and several others. He also presented his research at the Fourth Annual Society of Postdoctoral Scholars (SOPS) Research Symposium at University of Kentucky which was highly appreciated by post-docs and other faculty members attending the symposium.

Considering his impressive academic accomplishments, it does not seem as a surprise that Mr. Thakur graduated from his masters degree in May 2019, with a record number of 11 publications, in a span of less than 2 years. This includes 9 conference papers, 2 journal papers and 1 book chapter and is amongst the most, if not the most number of papers published by any graduating master's student from the Department of EECS at UC over the past few years. For his outstanding achievements in the field of Computer Science, Mr. Thakur was awarded a research grant and the 'Interdisciplinary Research Fellowship Award' by UC.

Mr. Thakur currently serves as reviewer of four academic journals – IEEE Access, Journal of Big Data and Cognitive Computing (MDPI), Journal of Applied Sciences (MDPI) and Journal of Social Sciences (MDPI). Recently he contributed a chapter titled 'A Framework for Developing a Smart and Adaptive Environment for Aging Population' for the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Publishers upcoming book 'Information and Communication Technologies for Humanitarian Services' to be published in 2020.

In addition to contributing to the academic research community, Mr. Thakur has been a role model on UC campus for helping the next generation of young minds to be successful researchers in the near future. He worked as a Graduate Assistant for the Office of Undergraduate Research at UC. In this position he played a key role in celebrating the works of numerous undergraduate researchers from as many as 34 different majors at UC, by highlighting them on the social media platforms of the Office of Undergraduate Research. By working for this office, within a period of 3 months, he was able to facilitate 133 connections between undergraduate and graduate students, based on mutual research interests, to help the former get research exposure and experience. Owing to his remarkable contributions to research and development, Mr. Thakur was also featured on the show, Bowled Over Bollywood on Bearcast Media, the official student-run radio broadcast and media group at UC.

Mr. Thakur is an active student member of ACM and IEEE. He is also the President of the Graduate Students Association for his department at UC, where he plays a key role in organizing events and activities aimed towards the holistic development of graduate students in his department. Since last year, he played a crucial role in inviting and organizing information sessions by several high-profile companies including Google, Northrop Grumman, Kroger, and Xetron. As an individual, he enjoys talking to students interested in pursuing careers in research and advising them to get a head-start in their respective fields. In addition to this, Nirmalya also works part-time as a Full Stack Web Developer for UC.

Mr. Thakur believes in maintaining a proper balance between work, study and enjoying life. He likes travelling, listening to music and watching movies during his leisure time. He wishes to go on a world tour in the near future. It is evident that Mr. Thakur has a scintillating career ahead of him and just 24, this young researcher intends to continue in the field of academic research and remain active in training and nurturing the next generation of aspiring researchers.
