Beverly Hills Orthodontist Takes Additional Precautions Due to Swine Flu

Beverly Hills Orthodontist Dr. Atoosa Nikaeen shares sanitation practices and encourages patients who feel under the weather to reschedule orthodontic appointments for the safety of themselves, staff and fellow patients.

LOS ANGELES, CA, May 19, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Beverly Hills Orthodontist Dr. Atoosa Nikaeen is educating patients on sanitary practices and taking some additional precautions in her office as a result of the recent H1N1- or swine flu- scare.

Making her practices known to her patients was important to the Beverly Hills orthodontics expert, due to the number of swine flu cases that have been documented in California, she said.

As of May 11, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 191 documented cases of swine flu in California and 2,618 cases through the United States. Three people have died in the U.S. of swine flu, but none were California residents.

"We give a great deal of attention to sanitation and sterilization in our office at all times," said Nikaeen, a Beverly Hills braces specialist. "But people begin to get nervous when they hear of outbreaks of new viruses such as swine flu, so at these times, we take the opportunity to educate others about our practices and to educate patients on how to protect themselves and others."

Nikaeen and her staff follow all requirements for sterilizing instruments used during patient visits, she said. Work surfaces are sanitized throughout the day, and sanitizers are provided to patients prior to using the brushing station.

"We always ask that patients reschedule their appointments if they have any type of cold," she said. "But particularly now, since so many people are worried about the swine flu, we reiterate that request for the protection of other patients and our staff."

Nikaeen said it is important to take these precautions particularly in the orthodontics field, because more than half of the confirmed swine flu cases are in children younger than age 18, according to the CDC. Most orthodontic patients also are within that age bracket.

"It is not our goal to cause a scare anyone," she said. "We just want to let people know that we are doing our part to promote a healthy clean environment in our office."
