Breast Augmentation Risks and Complications

Although the risks are few, it is best to be informed of the risks and possible complications associated with breast augmentation.

ORANGE COUNTY, CA, June 03, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Breast augmentation is a complex surgery and complications have been known to occur. Although the risks are few, it is best to be informed of the risks and possible complications associated with breast augmentation. Breast augmentation is an invasive surgical procedure where a foreign object is placed in the body. Of course, in the hands of a skilled and experienced surgeon, risks are reduced. However, there are risks inherent in all surgical procedures.

Risks and Complications

Some of the risks and complications of breast augmentation are:
• Infection
• Bottoming out of the implant
• Synmastia
• Capsular contraction

An infection usually will present itself within days or weeks of surgery. In rare cases an infection can occur long after surgery when the incisions have completely healed. Bottoming out is a complication involving the implant being too low in the breast tissue. This causes the nipples to point upwards. Synmastia is the appearance of the breasts being too close together.

Capsular contraction refers to a compressing of the implant. The body's natural healing process creates a capsule around the breast implant as it would around a pacemaker or artificial joint placed in the body. Capsular contraction, however, compresses the implant, causing it to appear distorted. Capsular contraction is not a common occurrence. All of these complications can be corrected with a surgical intervention.

There are risks related to any surgery from anesthesia to excessive bleeding. Some people may experience an allergic reaction to medications used after or during surgery which can cause nausea and vomiting. Naturally, all patients feel some sort of discomfort after surgery and this is to be expected.

Choosing a highly trained plastic cosmetic surgeon is very important if you are contemplating breast augmentation surgery. You should discuss the risks and complications involved with this surgery with your physician before making any decisions about your surgical procedure.
