Thomas W. Ogletree, Ph.D. Honored for Excellence in Theological Education

Yale Professor Emeritus is a Widely Published Author



    NEW HAVEN, CT, June 3, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Thomas W. Ogletree, Frederick Marquand Professor Emeritus of Ethics and Religious Studies for Yale Divinity School of Yale University, was recently featured in Cambridge Publishing's Top 101 Industry Experts book. With 45 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Ogletree is a respected authority on ethics and theological education. Now on his 18th year as professor with Yale Divinity School, he is responsible for teaching classes in theology and Christian social ethics. He previously served as dean of the school from 1990 to 1996 and considers this appointment to be the highlight of his career. He was also dean of the Theological School of Drew University. Honored by Cambridge Who's Who as Professional of the Year in Theological Education in 2008, Dr. Ogletree attributes his success to the inspiration he received from his parents and his wife, Mary-Lynn Ogletree.

A published author, Dr. Ogletree has written five books: 'The World Calling: 'The Church's Witness in Politics and Society,' 'Christian Faith and History: A Critical Comparison of Ernst Troeltsch and Karl Barth,' 'The Death of God Controversy,' 'The Use of the Bible in Christian Ethics' and 'Hospitality to the Stranger: Dimensions of Moral Understanding.' He was the editor of 'Soundings, An Interdisciplinary Journal' of the Society for Values in Higher Education from 1975 to 1980. He served as founding editor of The Annual Meeting of the Society for Values in Higher Education in 1981. He also edited openings for Marxist-Christian Dialogue in 1974 and co-authored 'From Hope to Liberation Towards a New Marxist-Christian Dialogue' with Herbert Aptheker and Shepherd Bliss. He co-edited 'Lifeboat Ethics: The Moral Dilemmas of World Hunger' with George Lucas Jr. Dr. Ogletree's more recent scholarly articles include 'Responsibility' 'Values and Valuation,' published in the Encyclopedia of Bioethics in 1995, 'Corporate Capitalism and the Common Good' which was published in the Journal of Religious Ethics in 2002, 'The Moral Formation of Persons and Communities,' which was published in 'A Companion to Religious Ethics' in 2002 and 'The Essential Unity of the Love Commands: Moving Beyond Paradox,' which was published in the Journal of Religious Ethics in 2007. His upcoming 'Love Commands' will be published in the 'Dictionary of Scripture and Ethics' and 'Biblical Foundations for Christian Social Teaching.'

In 1987, Dr. Ogletree was a Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge University, Cambridge, England. He pursued advanced studies in Phenomenology, Hermeneutics and the Moral Life at the Sorbonne in Paris, France (1973-1974) and advanced studies in "The Marxist-Christian Dialogue" at the Free University in West Berlin, Germany (1968-1969). He earned his Ph.D. in Theological Studies from Vanderbilt University in 1963. Additionally, he earned his Bachelor of Divinity in 1959 from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, from which he graduated summa cum laude, and his Bachelor of Arts in 1955 from Birmingham-Southern College, from which he also graduated summa cum laude. Recognitions of which he is a recipient include an honorary Doctor of Laws from Livingstone College and Hood Theological Seminary in 1995, an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Birmingham-Southern College in 1991, and an honorary Master of Arts from Yale University in 1990. Dr. Ogletree has been a Fellow at Pierson College since joining the faculty at Yale University in 1990.

Formerly, he was an accreditation team member of the Review of Duke Divinity School and of the Review of the University of Chicago Divinity School, a consultant on theological scholarship with the Association of Theological Schools, a selection committee member of the Faculty Fellowships Program of the Association of Theological Schools, the president, vice president and publications committee chairman of the Society of Christian Ethics, a board member of the executive committee board of the Society for Values in Higher Education, a member of the North American Academy of Ecumenists, and a chairperson of the Central Committee for Program Planning of the Society for Values in Higher Education.
