Kelly Fitzsimmons, RN, BSN, CCRN Honored for Excellence in Intensive Care Unit Nursing

First Female Firefighter for the City of Miami's Fire Rescue Division and Nursing Specialist with 46 Years of Professional Experience

CHANDLER, AZ, June 4, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kelly Fitzsimmons, Registered Nurse at Chandler Regional Medical Center, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of intensive care unit nursing.

Even after dedicating 33 years to the nursing profession, Ms. Fitzsimmons has still not lost her fascination with medicine. She continues to enjoy learning about new diseases, new cures, new drugs and the latest in equipment proficiency. An authority in the oversight of medical intensive care units and nursing acute care patients, she attributes her success to her ability to maintain her professionalism and competency. Prior to joining Chandler Regional Medical Center 13 years ago, Ms. Fitzsimmons, a native of Park Ridge, IL, worked as a head nurse in the intensive care and cardiovascular intensive care units at Phoenix Memorial Hospital from 1991 to 1996. From 1987 to 1991, she worked as an intensive care unit nurse for various Valley hospitals. During the early 1980's while living in Florida, she was a paramedic and the first female firefighter for the City of Miami's Fire Rescue Division, a feat of which she is most proud as it broke barriers for women and forged a path they could follow. Ms. Fitzsimmons also spent 10 years, from 1977 to 1987, as assistant head nurse in Hialeah Hospital's ICU where she earned the distinction of 1987 Super Nurse of the Year. Ms. Fitzsimmons began her vocation in 1976 as a staff nurse and relief charge nurse on the cardiovascular and thoracic surgery floor of Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

Ms. Fitzsimmons earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The University of Iowa. She is a certified critical care nurse, a certified paramedic and a certified firefighter. Honored as the outstanding Professional of the Year in Intensive Care Unit Nursing by Cambridge Who's Who in 2007, she is a member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and was inducted into the Miami Women's Hall of Fame in 1996.
