Petronio T. Lerona, a physician and radiologist at Medical Professional Associates of Arizona, P.C., utilizes his expertise in diagnostic radiology to teach medical students, radiology residents and technologists as well as oversee the operations of the clinical radiology practice. During his 50 years in the medical field, Dr. Lerona has conducted much diagnostic radiology research and authored or co-authored numerous scientific articles for such publications as the peer-reviewed American Journal of Roentgenology, which aims to advance medicine through the use of radiology and its allied sciences. Prior to and after joining Medical Professional Associates of Arizona, P.C, Dr. Lerona was chairman of Maricopa Integrated Health System's radiology department from 1981 to 2001.

A desire to help others prompted Dr. Lerona to pursue a career in healthcare. In addition to his current post, he provides charitable medical services to the poor and needy. The majority of his contributions have been through national and international charity hospitals and institutions, where he has volunteered his time providing reinterpretations of radiological images.

In 1960, Dr. Lerona received his medical degree from the University of the Philippines. He is board certified in diagnostic radiology by the American Board of Radiology and has fulfilled residencies in the United States and abroad. One such residency was completed in diagnostic radiology and radiation therapy at Philippines General Hospital; another in diagnostic radiology at Boston City Hospital and another in diagnostic radiology at Boston City University Hospital. He also completed fellowships in cardiovascular radiology at Harvard University and the University of Iowa.

Dr. Lerona is a founding member of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, and a member of the American Medical Association and the Association of University Radiologists. He is a former member of the American Roentgen Ray Society, the American College of Radiology and the American College of Physician Executives. He enjoys reading, writing, and attending family and community affairs in his spare time. While he finds great satisfaction being able to work in the medical profession and helping others for 50 years now, he is just about ready to retire - but not yet. "I'm 73 years old," Dr. Lerona says. "My short-term career goal is to continue working for as long as I can."
