PITTSBURGH, PA, Novmeber 24, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Jay C. Powell, Chief Executive Officer of Better Schooling and Information Systems, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in nonprofit educational services.
As CEO of Better Schooling and Information Systems, Dr. Powell is primarily responsible for encouraging educators to consider seriously the interpretation of students' wrong answers on tests as an information source for effective teaching. Currently he is in the final stages of publishing a book entitled "Making Peasants into Kings" which deals with worldwide testing practices and their grading systems. It presents a theory (anecdotally) that answers students give that are graded incorrect may be developmentally appropriate and reflect their interpretation of the questions. He attributes his correct success to careful observation while teaching, persistence in pursuit of his observations and enthusiasm for the resulting discoveries.
Dr. Powell received his Ph.D. in child development and educational measurement from the University of Alberta in 1970. He is a member of the National Council for Measurement in Education, the Psychometric Society, the World Future Society, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Phi Delta Kappa and the International Association for Applied Psychology. His major awards include becoming an IBM Fellow while teaching at the University of Windsor and, most recently, an invitation to contribute a chapter to a forthcoming monograph from Springer Publications on "Learning and Instruction on the Digital Age: Making a Difference Through Cognitive Approaches."
He hopes to travel around the world helping school systems to improve their assessment practices.
