"Is it Time to Repaint My Home?" - Ohio Painting Service Offers Tips for Knowing When to Repaint

Columbus, Ohio paint contractor, Sharper Impressions Painting, offers advice for homeowners about how to know when your home needs to be repainted and how to address the issue.

COLUMBUS, OH, December 14, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sharper Impressions Painting, Columbus-based painting service for residential and commercial properties, provides tips and signs of home wear-and-tear that let you know if your home needs repainted this winter season. Because realtors have recommended house painting as an excellent way to increase the value of a home before selling, many homeowners are becoming curious.

"Sometimes it's difficult for homeowners to know when to hire professional painters," said Geoff Sharp, founder of Sharper Impressions Painting. "We try to give homeowners an idea of what to look for, signs of damage and general guidelines for keeping their home maintained and updated with fresh paint."

Sharper Impressions Painting advises homeowners to remember a few important factors. First, some home surfaces need painting every year, including decks and stained front doors. On the other hand, some surfaces, like windowsills, only need painted every three years. Homeowners should be aware that most surfaces on a home, with one coat of paint, will last approximately five years. With two coats of paint, those same surfaces will last eight to 10 years and look much better during the life of the paint job.

Aside from regular maintenance, Sharper Impressions Painting recommends homeowners become aware of warning signs that indicate their home needs repainting such as mold and mildew, which appear as small grey spores on the surface of the paint. Mold and mildew flourish in the microscopic nuggets of a paint job. The sun fuels them, the moisture holds them and a roughed-up, porous older paint surface will permit them to grow.

Other key factors that signal you need to repaint are color fading and chalking, which is when the paint surface film actually breaks down, stops sticking to each other and becomes dust. The splitting of caulk at the seams on areas like garage doors is another indicator that it might be time to contact a residential repainting professional.

The final stages of paint failure include blistering and peeling. Blistering is when small hairline cracks form on the surface of the paint. Those cracks will continue to get bigger, connect to other cracks and make a whole circle on the surface of the paint, which then becomes peeling. At this point, the paint is no longer protecting the surfaces beneath it and the home becomes vulnerable to future damage like wood rot, stucco cracking or delaminating. The areas of paint peeling need touched up or recoated completely to protect the surfaces underneath.

"We've been providing professional residential painting services since 1992, and we strive to give our customers the best advice for maintaining and refreshing their home, inside and out," Sharp said. "It's important for homeowners to understand when repainting is necessary, and at Sharper Impressions Painting, we're able to provide that information and deliver beautiful results."
