Ball Transfer Units Seeing New Life in Retail Industry According to Connecticut Manufacturer

National retailers are using ball transfer units in place of traditional wheel casters for retail store displays due to ball transfers' increased mobility and lower costs.

EAST LYME, CT, January 21, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The most commonly held conception of ball transfers surely involves the material handling industry; conveyor systems, lifting systems and other industrial caster applications are, after all, the most likely uses for manufactured ball transfers. Well, conceptions change. Hudson Bearings, a Connecticut manufacturer of ball transfers, has noticed the ball transfer unit has migrated to uses within other industries over the past few years. The retail industry in particular has adopted the ball transfer unit as a viable and cost-effective alternative to traditional wheel casters for moving store displays.

"Ball transfer tables and other unit types are a common sight in conveyor systems today," notes company president Donnie Bowman. "What we find interesting and exciting is how this product has begun to find its way into numerous other industries, such as retail store display and fixture manufacturing."

A comparative analysis reveals the ball transfer unit has several advantages over the traditional wheel casters commonly used in retail store displays. Most obviously, ball transfers are capable of smooth, omni-directional motion. Fixed-wheel casters must swivel or pivot in order to change direction, often leading to wheels sticking in a certain position. Additionally, ball transfer units have a lower profile than most casters. This provides the fixture with a stationary appearance, while maintaining the ability to move to another section of the store if needed.

Due to the fact that ball transfers are designed and manufactured for industrial purposes, they can also handle a significantly higher load capacity than casters designed for the retail industry. Perhaps the most attractive selling point for the ball transfer unit, however, is the cost.

"Ball transfers provide a lower cost alternative to similar load capacity casters," adds Bowman. "Within the retail industry especially, we have seen that ball transfer units contribute to significant cost savings, due to the increased load capacity and longer product life."
