Options to Keep Teen Auto Insurance Costs Down

Statistically, teens pay more for car insurance due to the risk of being involved in traffic accidents; fortunately, there are ways to save.

PHOENIX, AZ, January 25, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The cost of automobile coverage can become quite an expense for many motorists; unfortunately for teenagers, the price of becoming insured can be very expensive compared to more mature drivers. Younger motorists are generally charged higher rates due lack of experience behind the wheel, bad driving habits and statistics showing that they are far more likely to be involved in a traffic accident than older drivers.

According to the Arizona state publication titled Teen Driver's Guide to Auto Insurance, it states, "The risk of an accident per mile driven among 16 to 19 year olds is four times the risk of older drivers." The guide also goes on to add, "Risk is highest at age 16, with the crash rate per mile driven almost three times as high as the risk among 18-19 year olds."

Although teenagers may have to pay higher rates due to the statistical data which shows them as being a higher risk to insure, there are ways to locate reasonable rates. An effective way to lower the cost of auto insurance for teens is to compare the premiums of a teenager being added to a parent's existing policy rather than obtaining coverage of their own; in many cases this can be much cheaper.

In addition, youths who are good students or have completed a recognized safe driving course can obtain a discount from many insurers and this should be addressed when shopping for coverage. Completion of a safe driving course may not only save money, but can also provide valuable knowledge which may help keep young motorists safer behind the wheel.

If a teenager is going to purchase a vehicle, it should be known that the type of automobile being covered will have a big impact on premiums. Parents should consider purchasing children safe, economical vehicles to keep rates down and if possible, purchase an automobile which will only need liability coverage; comprehensive and collision coverage for teenagers can become extremely expensive.
