Joan M. Hoffman, Ph.D. teaches Spanish literature, grammar and women's studies

BELLINGHAM, WA, February 3, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joan M. Hoffman, Ph.D., Professor of Spanish at Western Washington University, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of higher education.

A recognized expert on the topics of Spanish language and culture, Joan M. Hoffman, Ph.D. lends over 22 years of professional experience to Western Washington University. Now celebrating her 14th year with the university, she utilizes her extensive industry know-how to teach 19th century Spanish peninsular realism, feminism and women's studies. Dr. Hoffman provides Spanish literature and grammar instruction, and shares her knowledge with fellow professionals and students by lecturing at conferences. A published author, she has written a number of articles with a focus on 19th century Spanish literature, which have been featured in scholarly journals including Hispanófila, The Bilingual Review and Revista Hispánica Moderna.

Dr. Hoffman is a key member of Western's Department of Modern and Classical Languages. In fact, she played an instrumental role in coordinating a faculty union for which she now serves on the executive committee. She is driven by an innate desire to excel and overcome obstacles, and considers hard work and top-notch interpersonal skills to be the driving forces behind her success in higher education.

A graduate of Indiana University, Dr. Hoffman earned her Ph.D. in Spanish language and literature in 1994. She also holds a master of arts in romance languages from the University of North Carolina, earned in 1987 and a bachelor of arts in Spanish from the University of Washington, earned in 1984. Her professional affiliations include the Modern Language Association, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, Asociación Internacional de Galdosistas and Asociación de Literatura Femenina Hispánica. Looking ahead, Dr. Hoffman intends to continue writing and have her works published.
