Playing her Cards Right: Eve McCune

Entrepreneur Eve McCune sits down with Cambridge Who's Who to talk about canasta and how her simple invention is going to revolutionize the way the game is played

HENDERSON, NV, March 1, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Eve Naomi McCune has mastered the art of making the most of the hand that one is dealt - literally and figuratively. A 90-year-old dynamo and veritable jack-of-all-trades, she found success in numerous capacities from professional musician to office administrator; now an entrepreneur, she manages Eve, Inc., manufacturer of the U.S.-patented Canasta Organizer. About the size of a placemat with built-in pockets for holding canasta melds, the organizer simplifies the complex card game by allowing players to survey all cards on deck and helping them keep track of just how many they have. "The organizers even leave you with enough room for a cup of coffee and a sandwich," McCune beams. "With my organizer, canasta is as simple as a game of hearts."

A woman with diverse interests should be organized, and McCune's organization at the card table is simply a microcosm of how she has lived her colorful life. She enjoyed a varied career, occupying positions in a range of companies that included a dress shop, a car dealership and a bottle gas welding company. A self-taught go-getter, she excelled at playing the piano by expanding upon minimal lessons and has since brought her love of music to the Henderson Senior Center, of which she has been a part since the doors opened in 1989. She enjoys entertaining her fellow members by performing classics like Debussy's Clair de Lune and reworking themes from such films as The Godfather, Dr. Zhivago and Gone With the Wind. A born performer, McCune was crowned Miss Senior Henderson in 1994 and 1991 and has vied for the title of Miss Senior Clark County. In her first pageant, she played The Impossible Dream on the piano; an ode to steely determination in the face of insurmountable odds, it remains the tune with which she is most associated.

Having celebrated her 90th birthday last October, McCune is as passionate about life as ever - perhaps even more so. "The last half of my life has been the best half," she declares. Her cheery disposition is partly attributable to the Senior Center, which she calls her home away from home; it was also the place where she met her husband Larry when she was 72 years old. A firm believer that it is never too late to change one's life for the better, McCune left her native Michigan at the age of 49 and considers this the best move she ever made. She has more items on her agenda, however. "I've used my mind all my life. There are so many things I want to do," she says. By no means modest, her many aspirations include performing The Impossible Dream as a guest on The Jay Leno Show. "He gets old girls like me on the show now and then," she laughs. "I would even like to drive that race car around once or twice just for fun."

The most cherished of McCune's grand plans is, without a doubt, to see her organizer used in every canasta game. "I'm going to manufacture these organizers as long as I can. I really want the whole world to be using it," she shares. Employing the same gift for calculated risk that had guided her in life as well as on the card table, McCune is a safe bet to accomplish anything that she puts her mind to. "I learned that if you want to do something badly, you will do it. I don't care how hard you (have to) try, you can do it," she says. "The word 'can't' has to stay out of people's vocabulary."

Virtually unique and personally handmade by Eve McCune, each Canasta Organizer can be customized at no extra charge. Each costs $35 and is available online, with shipping fees waived. For more information, please visit http://www.canastaorganizer.com.
