RIO DE JANEIRO, March 05, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In the midst of building celebrations for March 8, International Women's Day, a major earthquake devastated Chile early Saturday morning, collapsing bridges, toppling buildings, crushing cars and razing entire neighborhoods and towns. At press time 700 are confirmed dead with the toll expected to rise as recovery efforts continue.

The 8.8 temblor triggered a tsunami that took hundreds of lives near its point of origin, swallowing numerous small villages that line Chile's coast, and threatened the entire Pacific Basin.

The earthquake is reported by NASA to have been of a magnitude sufficient to alter the distribution of the planet's mass, shifting Earth's axis and thus creating shorter days.

An ominous and challenging beginning to International Women's Day in Latin America, especially for Chilean Madam President Michelle Bachelet. What traditionally is a time to highlight women's accomplishments and beauty has become for President Bachelet an ordeal of fire. President Bachelet who leaves elected office in May with high approval ratings for having pulled Chile through the global economic crisis and promoting progressive social reforms, has her work cut out for her in recovering order and rebuilding her country in the face of such disaster.

To their credit, women in Latin America are particularly proud of their heritage of strength and determination, exemplified by the two women elected to the highest office in their respective countries, namely President Bachelet and President-elect Laura Chinchilla of Costa Rica. Indeed, women's social, educational and political progress in Latin America represents one of the most significant transformations in modern society.

Resourceful as Latin women can be, Bachelet is not alone. World leaders, businesses and individuals across the globe have marshaled huge assistance to the quake ravaged country.

American owned online dating portal AmoLatina.com, which helps unite Western men with women from across Latin America, including Chile, has initiated a relief drive with significant portions of her earnings earmarked for Chilean Relief within the American Red Cross.

"Now through March 8th, International Women's Day, we will donate 10% of our gross from services to members reaching out to women on our site." says Steve Stone, spokesperson for AmoLatina. "Email, Phone or Live-Chat with any lady from any Latin American country on AmoLatina, and a portion of your fees goes to relief. Further, we will contribute 25% of all proceeds from letters to women in Chile once we're reconnected there."

As there currently exists a sense of disbelief at the human and economic loss across Chile, there immediately is hope and defiance at such trials. And International Women's Day, March 8th, instead of knelling despair this year, will rally support and growth spawned by the fortitude of Latinas across the continent.
