Dr. Harold A. Geller Honored by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Science Education

Dr. Harold A. Geller Celebrates 30 Years of Experience at George Mason University



    FAIRFAX, VA, March 10, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ --Dr. Harold A. Geller, Observatory Director for George Mason University, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in science education.

Respected widely for his expertise in astronomy, Dr. Geller brings 30 years of experience to George Mason University. He is currently on his third year managing operations for the university observatory, which he himself designed, developed and organized. He also actively raised funds for the construction of the observatory, which was recently completed with the installation of a Ritchey-Chretien telescope. Dr. Geller conducts research and teaches graduate and undergraduate students as well, and has been presenting physics and astronomy classes at Mason since 1994.

Also a published author, Dr. Geller wrote a book on astrobiology curriculum development and created the graduate course Astronomy for Teachers, which was backed by the Virginia Earth Science Collaborative. He also oversaw the development of multimedia CD-ROMs for education and public outreach, drawing on a rich background in CD-ROM multimedia, website development, artificial neural network and microprocessor applications, computer simulation and modeling, and analog and digital electronics subsystems.

Prior to joining the academe, Dr. Geller served as lecturer, operator and weekend manager of the Albert Einstein Planetarium at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and as principal investigator for the Office of Naval Research, for which he developed geographic information systems for the restoration of Kahoolawe, HI and conducted research on the Arctic region. Trained by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, he has presented public speeches and educational demonstrations on astronomy, astrobiology and the search for life on Mars. The recipient of numerous honors, including the 2008 Faculty Member of the Year award from George Mason University and appreciation awards from the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club and the Virginia Academy of Science, Dr. Geller attributes his success to hard work and dedication.

Dr. Geller earned his Doctor of Education in 2005 and his Master of Arts in 1992, both from George Mason University. Additionally, he received a Bachelor of Science in 1983 from the University of the State of New York, an Associate of Science in 1981 from Northern Virginia Community College, and a certification in college teaching in 2002 from the State of Virginia. He currently serves as the president of the Potomac Geophysical Society. He is also affiliated with the Middle Atlantic Planetarium Society, the American Astronomical Society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Geophysical Union, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, the National Science Teachers Association, and the American Association of Physics Teachers. In five years, Dr. Geller aspires to become the senior administrator of a community college.
