CareSource Applauds Congress for Passage of Health Care Reform

Medicaid expansion & state-based exchange are among the positive changes CareSource supports with the health care reform passage.

DAYTON, OH, March 29, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- CareSource, Ohio's largest non-profit, public sector health care plan administrator, applauds passage of the health care bill President Obama signed.

"As an active supporter of health care reform, CareSource is very excited about the signing of the health care reform bill," said Pam Morris, CEO of CareSource. "We feel our member-focused, non-profit business model, which uses more than 90% of revenue toward health care services, is uniquely positioned to bring both high quality care and cost effective administration to this new health care system."

The bill's expansion of Medicaid to 15 million Americans with incomes below 133% of the Federal poverty level is one particular area that CareSource sees great promise. "We have seen first-hand the effects our current economic climate has had on the people of Ohio and Michigan, and our country in general. People are struggling to make health care a priority. This expansion in Medicaid is symbolic of government's compassion for helping our underserved stay healthy," Morris continued. Medicaid expansion will begin in 2014.

In addition to Medicaid expansion, CareSource cited the state-based health care exchange as another positive change to our health care system. CareSource is considering the possibility of becoming a participating plan in the state-based health exchange, which will allow individuals with income between 133% - 400% of poverty to purchase health coverage with federal subsidies.

"We believe this will offer our members the unique opportunity to transition from Medicaid to the exchange as needed, while retaining their coverage continuity with CareSource. It will also allow us to serve a new group of individuals, including parents of the children we serve today, as well as childless adults," said Director of Consumer Advocacy Toni Bigby.
