His first true test as an artist came when he performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Guadalajara at the Aranjuez Concert in Mexico when he was 22 and his calmness on stage convinced everyone that he was a star in the making.

So special is his repertoire that Renteria has worked with musicians as diverse as Carlos Santana and the great Luciano Pavarotti and his compositions have been used in films, the most famous being El Mariachi, which featured in Robert Rodriguez' 1995 movie Desperado.
