For Cosmetic Surgery, More Philadelphia Men Choosing Local Plastic Surgeon

While breast surgery such as breast augmentation continues to be popular for women, Dr. Mark Solomon is seeing more men for breast reduction and other procedures at his practice.

PHILADELPHIA, PA, April 24, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The gym is not the only resource men are turning to for a sculpted look - at least one Philadelphia plastic surgeon is reporting that more men are seeking out plastic surgery to improve their body shape. Dr. Mark Solomon (www.marksolomonmd.com), a board-certified plastic surgeon performing breast augmentation in Philadelphia as well as a number of male cosmetic surgeries, says he has seen an upswing in the number of men coming in for consultations in recent months.

"Male cosmetic surgery has been slowly increasing for the past few years, but right now I'm seeing a lot more interest in certain procedures," he says. "Partly this may be because the economy is picking up, but in my opinion it is mainly because more men feel that cosmetic surgery is 'acceptable' and are finding out what these procedures can do for them."

Dr. Solomon, who has also authored a textbook on male cosmetic surgery, says that while options like male body contouring and pectoral enhancement are popular, breast/chest reduction is a main procedure interest for many men considering cosmetic surgery in Philadelphia. Male breast reduction corrects gynecomastia, a condition of oversized "breasts" caused by genetics, medications, or a hormone imbalance.

"The condition is difficult to ignore, which I think is a big reason why men are more willing to seek out a solution," says Dr. Solomon. "A feminine looking chest also can get in the way of everyday activities like swimming, which could be one reason I'm seeing increased interest - women aren't the only ones thinking about how they'll look on the beach this summer."

While the growing demand is prompting some surgeons to start offering male cosmetic surgery for the first time, Dr. Solomon notes that male patients require an experienced approach that differs considerably from the techniques involved in cosmetic surgery for women.

"Male surgery is going for an entirely different aesthetic than surgery for women, and every aspect of the procedure has to keep that in mind," he explains. "A surgeon who sees mostly female patients for body contouring and breast enlargement in Philadelphia may lack the eye for what looks best on a man."

For better outcomes in procedures like male breast reduction, pectoral enhancement, and genital enhancement, Dr. Solomon recommends that men begin their search by looking for a doctor who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Then, he says, they should find out how many years he or she has been performing plastic surgery for men, and closely examine before and after photos of patients.

"A highly-trained surgeon who is experienced in addressing the complexities of the male physique specifically will be much more capable to get good results that fit what the patient wants," adds Dr. Solomon.
