Modern Block From Bentley Prince Street And Robert A.M. Stern Architects Combines Modern Sensibility With Historically Informed Design

Longtime partners bring the comfort of home to institutional spaces with new broadloom and carpet tile series.

LOS ANGELES, CA, May 13, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Bentley Prince Street, an industry leader in design, quality and sustainability, is proud to partner with Robert A.M. Stern Architects to launch Modern Block. Modern Block is this year's carpet offering in the Robert A.M. Stern Collection, which includes a wide range of interior and exterior furnishing products. It is available in both broadloom and carpet tile, as well as twelve colorways inspired by natural materials such as brick, slate, limestone, sisal and linen. Made with Antron Lumena 6.6 nylon, this product offers institutional durability without sacrificing a residential aesthetic. With a rhythmic design featuring contemporary geometric patterns in rich colorways, this product is at home in healthcare, hospitality, educational and multi-family residential settings.

Bentley Prince Street is committed to eliminating any negative impact they have on the environment by the year 2020. Robert A.M. Stern Architects is proud to join with partners that share its commitment to design and to environmentally sustainable materials and practices. Modern Block comes standard with High PerformancePC backing, which contains a minimum average 10% post-consumer recycled content. Modern Block broadloom is certified to the NSF-140 Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard at the Platinum level and carpet tile is certified to the Gold level.

"Since 2003 we have been creating floor coverings with Robert A.M. Stern Architects that bring modern elegance to the marketplace," said Anthony Minite, president of Bentley Prince Street. "Modern Block continues that legacy with classical geometric patterning created with a color palette that makes this design truly contemporary."

"By rendering formal and syncopated rhythms of 20th century modernism in a contemporary color palette and using best sustainable practices, we have produced a design for our own time and place," said Alexander Lamis, Partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects.

"It is a creative dream to work with the team at Robert A.M. Stern Architects because they bring a structural sensibility to the design process," explained Valerie Ottaviano, vice president of product design, Bentley Prince Street. "The result is products like Modern Block, which are harmonious contradictions; subtle yet rich, classic yet modern and patterns that are rectangular yet linear."

The solution dyed patterns in Modern Block envelop a wide range of settings with refined modernity. Although the feeling this product evokes is domesticity, there is no mistaking its durability. Capitalizing on new technology Modern Block is constructed with Antron Lumena 6.6 nylon which is resistant to crushing, matting and soil penetration. High PerformancePC broadloom backing is engineered with a tightly-woven primary and secondary backing for better stability and straighter patterns. The carpet tile is backed with NexStep Cushion Tile which features an 18-pound density polyurethane cushion, with a fiberglass layer between the cushion and the adhesive. This provides dimensional stability and an impermeable moisture barrier. Modern Block is the eighth collection designed in partnership with Robert A.M. Stern Architects.
