Energy Saving & Safety Film Reduces Solar Heat Gain Resulting in Lower Energy Bills

CT company launches energy-efficient solar control and security window film business.

FAIRFIELD, CT, May 19, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that one-third of a typical building's cooling load is from solar heat gain through windows and, according to independent sources, 75% of existing windows are not energy-efficient. Parish Associates, based in Fairfield, CT, the leading builder of custom English conservatories throughout the US, has launched Parish Window Film to make windows more energy efficient, add protection from shattered glass and deter theft.

Parish installs glass treatment films designed for solar control, safety, security and decorative applications to the residential and commercial markets. Applied to the interior of the glass window, the solar control film reduces excessive solar heat gain and glare by as much as 85% and improves insulating properties by up to 30%. Safety and security film provides protection from flying glass in the case of storms, bomb blasts or break ins.

Parish is a factory-certified dealer and installer of LLumar film (a division of CPFilms). LLumar, based in Virginia, is the #1 manufacturer and distributor of window film in the world. Their client list includes The Vatican, Buckingham Palace, Chrysler World Headquarters, Fresno State University, EXXON Headquarters, Loma Linda University Medical Ctr., and many US Government buildings. Proven in buildings throughout the world, LLumar film installation delivers an impressive average payback time of just 2.65 years.

The film is a laminate of strong polyester and metalized coatings bonded by adhesives that provide a significant solar insulation for all types of glass. The patented, protective scratch-resistant coating on the films has been independently tested and is the most durable in the industry. Each product blocks 99% of harmful UV rays, comes with a factory-backed warranty and can be cleaned with regular window cleaner and a soft cloth.

The US Dept. of Energy conducted a study on the benefits of installing solar control window film. They found that solar control films are an effective means of lowering building energy costs by reducing excessive solar heat gain through inefficient windows and the film has a considerable positive effect on reducing annual kwhr and summer peak demand.

Professional energy audits estimate that commercial buildings retrofitted with energy efficient films could realize annual energy savings as high as 15% with improved HVAC efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. As an energy efficient product, window film can garner up to 9 LEED points and homeowners can save up to 40% on energy bills.

"Window film is a cost effective way to save money on energy bills, protect art work and furnishings from fading and hold shattered glass in case of violent weather, smash and grab thieves or terror attacks," said Paul Zec, owner of Parish Associates, "It also stops excessive glare that hurts the eyes and interferes with computer screens and TVs."

Many states and the Federal Government have financial incentives available to help with installing energy efficient products such as window film. The Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund will pay up to 40% of the cost to install solar control window film in commercial buildings and under Bill H.R. 5019, homeowners are eligible to receive a tax rebate totaling up to 50 percent of an energy efficient project, not to exceed $3,000 per home. Parish also provides a free window film energy audit for its commercial building customers.

Fresno State University realized an annual savings of $135,000 (6%of campus energy use) by installing LLumar window film. And Edison plaza, a commercial building in Detroit, lowered its chiller capacity by 20%, its energy use by 5% and received a $24,000 energy rebate making the payback less than 3 years.

"Once the film is installed there is an immediate reduction in heat and glare," stated Kathryn Strachan, head of sales and marketing. "We get calls from architects, builders, schools, building owners and managers, retailers, ESCOs, green builders, designers, glaziers and homeowners looking for a solution to the sun's heat, glare, harmful UV rays and high energy costs."
