New Study Shows Nearly Half of All Adult Americans Have One or More Dangerous Diseases that Affect the Heart

A recently-released study shows that half of all Americans have one or more of three diseases that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

LOS ANGELES, CA, May 22, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A recently-released study shows that half of all Americans have one or more of three diseases that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes. In addition, the study showed that one in eight Americans has at least two of these conditions, and one in 33 has all three. Most troubling, the study showed that of Americans with these conditions, 15% have not been diagnosed. These conditions are all related to obesity, and Los Angeles bariatric surgeon Dr. Carson Liu sees this study as a significant wake-up call.

"People should see the seriousness of this problem," Dr. Liu said, "and work to address obesity before it's too late. Exercise and dieting are important components to beginning to reverse obesity." Dr. Liu, who maintains a blog on obesity and its treatment, added, "It's never too late to turn your life around."

Dr. Liu also notes that bariatric surgery is a good option for many people. "It's not for everyone, but for some people it is the best way to counteract some of the effects of obesity. Even super morbidly-obese patients can safely benefit from laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding," he says.

All populations in the Los Angeles area are affected by these diseases. African-Americans had the highest rates of high blood pressure, while European-Americans were more likely to have high cholesterol, and Mexican-Americans were more likely to have diabetes.
