Top Cyber-Warrior Ira Winkler calls for Common Sense to Secure Computing Infrastructure; Will Give Keynote Address at 2nd Annual Information Security Summit Hosted by the Los Angeles Chapter of ISSA

Cyber-Warrior Ira Winkler said today "there can be no common sense without common knowledge" when addressing the deficiencies of computer security.

MARINA DEL REY, CA, June 03, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When everyone reads about computer attacks, you get the impression that they are committed by computer geniuses. The reality is that just about all hackers are opportunists, who take advantage of completely preventable problems. Computer security is really common sense. Unfortunately, there can be no common sense without common knowledge. ISSA Los Angeles is providing common knowledge so that businesses and our country as a whole can start exercising common sense.

Mr. Winkler, the author of Spies Among Us and Zen and the Art of Information Security, has been called a "Modern Day James Bond" by the media. He will speak at the 2nd Annual Information Security Summit. The theme of this year's Summit is Unleashing the Power of Collaboration; collaboration between, executives, Information Technology professionals and Information Security experts. The Summit will be held Wednesday June 16, 2010 at 7:30am on the UCLA Campus, hosted by UCLA Extension.

Stan Stahl, ISSA-LA President, information security pioneer and noted consultant states, "The Summit is the only educational forum in Los Angeles specifically designed to encourage participation and interaction among three, vital information security constituencies: (1) business executives, senior business managers, and their trusted advisors; (2) technical IT personnel with responsibility for information systems and the data they contain; and (3) information security practitioners with responsibility for ensuring the security of sensitive information."

"It's vital to us that our program appeal to business executives and other senior business managers since they have traditionally thought about information security as a technical matter. That's no longer true and it's important that ISSA-LA help our business leaders understand this. Otherwise, how are they to properly protect their organizations? We feel very strongly that part of our mission is to raise management awareness and understanding about the rising cybercrime challenge. After all, they're the ones with ultimate responsibility if anything goes wrong."

"Because of the importance of helping non-technical management understand their cybercrime challenges we invited Brian Krebs to be one of our keynote speakers," Dr. Stahl continued. "Brian is the #1 cybersecurity journalist in America and his blog Krebsonsecurity.com was recently named the best non-technical security blog."

Following Mr. Krebs keynote address, the executives in attendance will be provided a two hour cybercrime executive briefing featuring a distinguished panel of information security experts. Additional tracks will be held throughout the day aimed at providing ongoing education to IT and information security personnel.

"We also have to help the IT community understand the changing face of cybercrime," continued Dr. Stahl. "Yesterday's defenses don't work against the worst of today's cyber-attacks. The Summit is the perfect place for our community's IT professionals to learn what they must do to stay ahead of the cybercriminals. IT professionals will learn how to meet the latest cyber challenges from industry leaders and get to talk to more than 25 information security vendors."

The Information Security Summit is part of ISSA-LA's important community outreach program. The goal of the program is to help our community stay safe from cybercrime by enabling the necessary collaboration between decision makers, technical IT professionals and the information security community.
