Breast Augmentation Surgeon in New Jersey Recommends Implant Massage

Dr. Evan Sorokin performs a quick recovery breast augmentation technique that limits downtime and discomfort for his patients. However, he says that women still need to make an effort to ensure good results with aftercare, such as implant massage.

CHERRY HILL, NJ, June 13, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Anyone considering breast augmentation knows the importance of choosing an experienced plastic surgeon who cares about them and the success of their procedure. But, according to Dr. Evan Sorokin (www.delawarevalleybreasts.com), a board-certified plastic surgeon performing breast enlargement (augmentation) in New Jersey, the patient's diligence in following her surgeon's instructions for aftercare is equally as important to ensuring beautiful, lasting results.

"The quality of the surgical technique that a surgeon uses to perform a breast augmentation has an undeniable impact on the downtime and discomfort level that a patient will experience," says Dr. Sorokin. "But, when it comes to ensuring lasting results, I cannot put enough emphasis on the importance of aftercare, especially implant massage."

Dr. Sorokin stresses the importance of breast implant massage because it is an effective precaution women can take to prevent capsular contracture, the hardening of the scar tissue around breast implants. Capsular contracture can cause the implant to change shape and become painful. For many women, this may mean additional surgery to correct the problem.

"While my implant massage instructions may vary according to each woman's anatomy and their choice of breast implant in New Jersey, I usually instruct patients to start moving the implant in the pocket at least 5 or 6 times a day, starting 10 days after surgery," says Dr. Sorokin. "In order to effectively massage the implant and the surrounding tissue, the patient can roll the implant back and forth, squeeze it with her fingers, and compress it repeatedly with her hands. About 3 to 4 months after surgery, most patients are able to reduce the frequency of massaging to 1 full minute twice a day."

In addition to implant massage, there are a number of things that New Jersey and Cherry Hill plastic surgeons recommend their patients do immediately following a breast augmentation procedure to reduce discomfort and the risk of complications. It's very important that breast augmentation patients get plenty of rest in the first few days after their procedure. They should not do any lifting (even of small children), house cleaning, or driving until their surgeon says it's okay to do so. Like many plastic surgeons, Dr. Sorokin usually prescribes antibiotics for his breast enlargement patients to help minimize the risk of infection. All instructions regarding antibiotics, pain pills, and sleep aids should be followed very carefully.

"Achieving a successful breast augmentation is truly a team effort," says Dr. Sorokin. "Of course, successful performance of the actual surgery is up to me and my surgical team, but it's also important that the patient and I work together to ensure that she is comfortable with the process and understands her pre- and post-operative responsibilities. Diligence in aftercare, especially long-term aftercare like implant massage, is key to ensuring that breast implants look beautiful and feel natural for a long time to come."
