Symptoms of Wisdom Teeth Problems

Wisdom teeth problems are one of those things in life that most people do not like to think about, but almost everyone has to deal with at some point.

WASHINGTON, DC, June 26, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Wisdom teeth problems are one of those things in life that most people do not like to think about, but almost everyone has to deal with at some point. In fact, they are so common that if you develop wisdom teeth it is recommended to them removed before you reach your mid-twenties as a preventative measure, before problems arise and while the surgery is still relatively easy.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Most people just do not have room in their mouths for wisdom teeth to grow in properly. An impacted wisdom tooth is one that has not grown in properly. Impacted wisdom teeth come in many forms.

The tooth may be rowing at the wrong angle, such as pointing toward the front of the mouth or sideways, rather than growing upwards. Or, it can be growing upwards, but blocked from fully erupting by a portion of the molar in front of it.

Symptoms of Wisdom Teeth Problems

Regular dental visits with X-rays will reveal impending problems with your wisdom teeth. If you have wisdom teeth coming in, it is best to have them removed between the ages of 14 and 24, when removal is easiest. After that the bone in which the roots are growing becomes denser and the roots themselves are more fully formed, making the surgery more traumatic.

You may not have been going to the dentist regularly and may not know you have wisdom teeth trying to come in. Or, you may have known but not experienced any problems before. Symptoms of wisdom teeth problems can include:

- Mouth pain
- Limited ability to open mouth
- Swelling of the gums
- Facial swelling
- Swollen jaw
- Gum infection or discharge
- Crowded teeth
- Teeth that feel like they are shifting or pressing into each other
- Bitter taste in the mouth
- Bad breath

Abscessed Wisdom Tooth

An abscessed wisdom tooth is an infection that can have serious complications and can even become fatal. The infection can spread to the jawbone and other parts of the body including the brain.

Impacted wisdom teeth are especially prone to infection because they cannot be properly cleaned. When the tooth is partially erupted, food particles and bacteria can collect under the gum where you cannot reach them, decaying the wisdom tooth and leading to infection.

If you are experiencing symptoms of wisdom teeth problems and live in the Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. area, please visit the website of oral and maxillofacial surgeon Daria Hamrah to learn more about wisdom tooth extraction at www.novasurgicare.com.
