Teenage Boys Provide Street Flume Cooling Stations to Exhausted New Yorkers

Michael French and Alex Gere (Xfuel founder), in co-operation with On Site Energy, are providing walk-by cooling stations to overheated New Yorkers.

AUSTIN, IN, July 15, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The cooling stations are environmentally-friendly diesel-driven air-conditioning units with a long duct that has holes along its length where the cool air comes out, providing passersby with individual streams of cool, refreshing air.

Michael French was quoted as saying: "Alex and I are avid gamers and while on Xbox we talked about the problems in NY due to the record high temperatures. My father's company is a dealer for On Site Manufacturing (OSM) who makes a portable OEM command (Office of Emergency Management) trailer called the PEACH (Packaged Electric Air Conditioning & Heating). It is basically a temporary command tent for emergency situations with its own HVAC and electricity. Our goal was to get OSM to volunteer and place these PEACH units around heavy pedestrian traffic areas in NYC but the tents take up quite a bit of room. When we first tried to deploy them it as obvious we needed a more street friendly way to get the cool air to the people."

Realizing they had space restrictions the two boys devised a new style of cooling delivery system for the PEACH. We asked Alex Gere to tell us about the design change: "We looked at the narrow sidewalks and immediately thought of a Slip and Slide with the little water jets along it. You can't use water so we thought to make an air tube with good size holes along it and pump cold air in it. People can line up along the tube and get cold air blasted on them and feel refreshed even if only for a couple minutes just to take the sweat away. It's funny when you see it in use, people line up and wait to get a blast of air almost like waiting for the log flume ride at Six Flags Great Adventure and catching a little spray - maybe we'll call it a 'Street Flume'?"

The boys' fathers are employed by On Site Energy, a regional renter of power and temperature control equipment since 1984. Michael and Alex wanted to extend a "thank you" to On Site Energy, On Site Manufacturing and their fathers for donating the use of the PEACH units and their time toward helping the people of New York City deal with this summer's extreme heat.
