DePuy Hip Recall Could Immediately Affect 11,000 Patients

A study completed in the United Kingdom showed a large number of DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Systems experienced failure within the first five years of operation, and was the basis for the DePuy hip recall.

PHOENIX, AZ, September 16, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On August 26, 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. (the orthopedic division of Johnson & Johnson) issued a recall of its ASR XL Acetabular Hip Replacement and ASR Hip Resurfacing Systems. The DePuy hip recall comes after numerous complaints and lawsuits have been filed against the company since 2007 alleging they manufactured a defective product, were responsible for design and manufacture negligence, and failed to warn doctors and their patients about the inherent dangers of the DePuy ASR Hip Replacement System.

A study completed in the United Kingdom showed a large number of DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Systems experienced failure within the first five years of operation, and was the basis for the DePuy hip recall. Patients who experienced loosening of the implant, failure of the implant or a fractured hip bone from use of their hip replacement system were forced to complete a second hip replacement surgery (also known as a revision surgery).

News of the DePuy hip recall sent shockwaves through a community of approximately 93,000 DePuy ASR Hip Replacement System patients who now must face the possibility of complications or complete failure from their DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Systems in the near future. It is estimated that 11,000 patients at or near the 5-year mark of their hip replacement surgery may now require an immediate revision surgery. Additional replacement surgeries are expected as younger DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Systems age and begin to fail in the coming years.
Patients undergoing a revision surgery due to the DePuy hip recall will have to endure months of rehabilitation and recovery time from the procedure. This time, pain and suffering that will result from a complete ASR hip replacement is not addressed in DePuy's outlined process for reimbursing patients for their surgery, testing and monitoring costs.

Symptoms or side effects of DePuy ASR Hip Replacement System failure may include the onset of unexplained hip, thigh or groin pain, and pain when walking, standing up or carrying weighted objects.
