Dimple-Plasty: New or Just Newly-Popular?

Fad gives popularity and media exposure to unusual plastic surgery procedure, but the origins of the procedure are unknown.

MCLEAN, VA, October 01, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- According to many media reports, there is a hot new plastic surgery procedure known as dimple-plasty. Although this procedure does seem to be experiencing a surge, some claim this procedure is not new, only newly-popular.

Dimples are commonly described as abnormalities, sometimes even defects, in the zygomatic muscles, which are essential to smiling and other facial expressions. In people with dimples, this muscle has a division, with the smaller portion of the muscle attached to the skin of the cheek. When the zygomatic muscle contracts, the two portions of the muscle separate, and the smaller portion pulls in the skin to create the dimples.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Daria Hamrah, claims, "Dimple-plasty is a relatively simple and quick procedure with minimal recovery time and essentially no down time. It is an excellent solution for patients who want to achieve a certain look. This procedure has quickly become one of the hottest procedures and the results are very predictable."

In dimple-plasty, a small incision is made inside the cheek and the surgeon creates an adhesion that will lead to dimples when a person is smiling. The outpatient procedure generally takes only a few minutes.

Whether the procedure is new or not is up for debate. At least one surgeon claims to have learned the procedure in the 1970s, but the first major reference describing the anatomy of dimpling did not appear until 1998. Although this does not make it impossible that the procedure dates from the 1970s, it does cast doubt and mean that it will be hard to confirm such a claim.

There are no statistics to indicate how many dimple-plasties are performed annually, but doctors who perform them report they have performed "hundreds" of such procedures in the last two years.
