NJ Psychiatrist Uses Special Problem Solving Methods

Dr. Yitzhak Shnaps a NJ psychiatrist is one of the few doctors in the U.S. who regularly uses the "Collaborative Problem Solving" approach in his practice.

PRINCETON, NJ, October 23, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Yitzhak Shnaps, a NJ psychiatrist, is one of the few doctors in the U.S. and the only doctor in New Jersey to regularly use the innovative "Collaborative Problem Solving" (CPS) approach in treating child patients. CPS is outlined in Ross W. Greene and J. Stuart Ablon's book: Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative Problem Solving Approach.

This approach assumes that challenging behaviors in children are the result of lagging cognitive skills while other methods might view such behavior as attention-seeking, limit-testing, manipulation, or an indicator of poor motivation. "CPS also takes the position that treating these patients involves teaching them the skills they need," observes Dr. Shnaps, one of the best NJ psychiatrists. "Whereas other parents might use rewards, punishments, or the imposition of a parent's will."

The doctor must first identify the cognitive skills that the patient is lacking. "Then the doctor uses CPS to help develop these skills by teaching children and their parents to resolve disagreements in a collaborative way," explains one of the best New Jersey psychiatrists Dr. Shnaps. The process involves three major steps:

1. Empathy/Reassurance: Identify the child's concern about a given issue. Reassure the child that the issue will not be resolved through a parent imposing his or her will.
2. Define the Problem: Identify the parent's concern about the same issue.
3. Invitation: The child is invited to join the parent in brainstorming possible resolutions for the problem. The ultimate objective is to agree on a plan that is both realistic and mutually satisfactory.
