Reglan Lawsuits Allege Acid Reflux Drug Caused Tardive Dyskinesia

Hundreds of people who developed Tardive Dyskinesia after taking Reglan have filed Reglan lawsuits against makers for hiding potential side effects. Are you one of them? Find out if you have legal recourse against the manufacturer.

SAUSALITO, CA, December 18, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Hundreds of people who developed Tardive Dyskinesia after taking Reglan have filed Reglan lawsuits against makers for hiding potential side effects. Are you one of them? If so, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.

No Cure For Reglan Side Effects

Reglan (made by Avalon Pharmaceuticals and Baxter Healthcare Corporation) and metoclopramide (the generic equivalent of Reglan sold by Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Pliva Inc, Mutual Pharmaceutical Company Inc and Major Pharmaceuticals Inc), are antidopamine drugs which treat nausea, vomiting and heartburn due to gastroesophogeal reflux (more commonly called acid reflux). These drugs are generally only approved for short term treatment. However, they are often prescribed for longer periods of time until symptoms subside - which also increases the risk of developing Tardive Dyskinesia.

Tardive Dyskinesia, the Reglan side effect which has negatively affected so many lives, is a neurological disorder which causes uncontrollable, repetitive movements of the body, such as grimacing, lip smacking, eye blinking or rapid leg, arm and finger movements. There is no known cure and these side effects very often persist after patients stop using Reglan - regardless of what manufacturers have said in the past.

Manufacturers Knew About Dangers Years Ago

What did Reglan and metoclopramide makers know about the dangers of their product - and when did they know it? The answers to those questions, according to filed lawsuits, seem to be "a lot more than they admit" and "a long time ago." So, why didn't they warn about the increased risk of developing Tardive Dyskinesia years before the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) required them to include a black box warning on their products? That answer to that is likely "profits" as these drugs bring in billions of dollars in revenue every year. The issue of liability has become very contentious and the U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether generic metoclopramide makers had a duty to warn consumers years ago.

What Can You Do?

Anyone injured due to Reglan or metoclopramide use should consult with a Reglan attorney to discuss your situation, determine whether filing a Reglan lawsuit might be in your best interests and to find out more about how the Supreme Court case might affect you. You might be entitled to compensation for your injuries such as hospital/medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
