Body Contouring: Shaping a New Perspective

When stubborn fat cells will not shrink despite diet and exercise, body contouring surgery is a great option.

NEW YORK, NY, January 09, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When stubborn fat cells will not shrink despite diet and exercise, body contouring surgery is a great option. Body contouring is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand cosmetic skin procedures in the United States. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, in 2009, Americans underwent almost twice as many liposuction procedures and almost four times as many tummy tucks as they did a decade earlier.

Thanks to the growing popularity of body contouring procedures, technologies are constantly being updated and improved. Many body contouring procedures are available to address anyone's problem areas, but the two most popular are liposuction and tummy tucks.

Liposuction

Liposuction, or lipoplasty, is the surgical removal of fat cells through a stainless steel suction tube called a cannula. Liposuction is often used in conjunction with other plastic surgery techniques to remove fat from trouble spots like the thighs, hips, abdomen, upper arms and even neck. Several different types of liposuction exist, including:

- Tumescent liposuction - involves the injection of a large amount of anesthetic into the treated area
- Ultrasonic assisted liposuction (UAL) - before the fat is removed, sound waves are used to liquefy the fat cells
- Power assisted liposuction (PAL) - employs a motor-power cannula, allowing the surgeon to use smaller movements to reduce the patients' pain

The recovery period after liposuction is fast and the results of the procedure can be seen immediately. Results appear even more dramatic as healing progresses. Though many people view liposuction as a weight loss procedure, the candidates who will receive the best results from liposuction are those who are fairly close to their ideal body weight.

Tummy Tucks

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure used to remove excess fat and skin and restore weakened or separated abdominal muscles. This procedure can give patients the smoother and firmer abdominal profile they can't achieve with diet and exercise. Patients considering having a tummy tuck should discuss the procedure with an qualified plastic surgeon to learn which option is best suited to their needs:

- Complete abdominoplasty - this procedure involves making an incision from hipbone to hipbone and is reserved for those patients who require the most correction
- Partial or mini abdominoplasty - this procedure requires shorter incisions and is most beneficial to patients whose fat deposits are located below the navel

Tummy tuck procedures should not be viewed as an alternative to weight loss, but a compliment to it. Tummy tucks are suitable for both men and women, but women who are still planning to have children should postpone the tummy tuck until after the pregnancy.
