Atlanta Tree Service Yellow Ribbon Tree Experts Advises Proper Mulching in Response to Spring Showers

Atlanta tree removal company Yellow Ribbon Tree Experts offers homeowners advice on mulching their trees for hydration and irrigation system.

ATLANTA, GA, April 07, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Atlanta tree service company Yellow Ribbon Tree Experts views spring as a perfect time to care for trees, especially as more and more homeowners get out to work in their yards. Often, an early spring brings with it significant amounts of rain which can have adverse effects on trees, especially if proper mulching techniques are not followed.

Yellow Ribbon Tree Experts, Atlanta tree removal company, is advising homeowners on how to correctly lay mulch around trees in order to create an environment that will encourage growth and health during the spring rain season. Mulch improves soil structure, oxygen levels, temperature, and moisture availability where the roots of trees grow.

"Follow a few helpful guidelines when it comes to mulching and you will keep your trees healthy and improve their overall growing environment," explains Gary Robertson, owner of Yellow Ribbon Tree Experts. "Homeowners should always be sure, however, never to over-mulch as this can actually harm your trees."

The most effective way to apply mulch around trees calls is to lay out a two to four inch layer in well-drained areas; an even thinner layer should be used in areas that drain poorly. When mulch is laid in excess of two to four inches around trees it will hold on to extra moisture around the roots, causing stress to the tree and potential root rot. This is especially true during the rain-filled springtime months. Over-mulching can also lead to insect and disease problems, weed growth, and habitat creation for rodents, among other things. In addition, homeowners should avoid laying mulch against tree trunks.

When laying out mulch, keep in mind to mulch out to the tree's drip line or beyond. Also, avoid using uncomposted wood chips; composted wood chips are preferable. Although most general mulches are fine for most trees, a little extra research into the specific trees and plants in your yard will show whether an acidifying mulch, like pine bark, would be more beneficial.
