DaySpring Preschools Holiday Tips: How to keep your child from being overwhelmed during the holidays

The holidays not only provide excitement, but also undue stress for children. DaySpring Preschools in N. Texas seek to educate parents on the affects of the holidays on kids.

/24-7PressRelease.com/ - “Sometimes children have ‘meltdowns’ because there is too much anticipation and too many unrealistic expectations around the holidays,” says Laura Varnell, director Dayspring – Plano.

DaySpring offers these tips to ensure a stress-free holiday season for children and parents alike:

-- Talk with your child ahead of time and tell them what to expect. Show them pictures of previous holiday seasons and remind them of friends and relatives they may only see once a year.
-- Never force your child to be held by people he or she is not comfortable with; this includes relatives, friends, and Santa. Let your child warm up to people; forcing your children will only exacerbate their fears.
-- Keep your children on their “normal” schedule as much as possible. This includes avoiding shopping trips, activities, and even visitors during nap times.
-- Involve your child with decorating. Making the transition together will help them understand the changes that are taking place and give them a comfort level with them.
-- Make time for calming activities. Slow down the pace and remember to enjoy just being together as a family.
-- Limit children’s gifts and make them age appropriate. For large families, suggest savings bonds as gifts for your children.
-- While children are young, limit travel. Long rides in the car are especially stressful on infants.
-- Teach your children about giving and involve them in gift selection and making gifts.

The holidays are a great time to introduce your children to many exciting traditions and festivities. DaySpring encourages parents to watch children for signs of over stimulation. As Rhonda Nekuza, director DaySpring-NRH says, “Limits are the key to maintaining a stress-free holiday.” To ease the holidays at the school, the centers continue to follow their mission of providing a home-like setting year-round, and being an extension of each family.
